All the protags are named after the games themselves
I've yet to finish reading it myself, just got to BW, but so far, it's not bad. Felt like gen 1 and 2 weren't the most exciting but gen 3 and 4 were cool in my book. Ruby and Sapphire were good protags.

Nah. Player Lucas has Chimchar and NPC Lucas has Chimchar when Dawn has Piplup. He only ever has the chimpus, and that's the way it should be

Manga canon is and always will be separate from game canon. Game Lucas has the monkey because he's a different character than Diamond

Art-fx doesn't follow canon
They gave Leaf Squirtle and Red Charmander while Oak got Bulbasaur even though it's impossible story-wise as Blue was left without a starter

I can't picture Barry with anything but Chimchar. Fits his hyperactive personality better.

I don't think the starter's personality necessarily has to match its owner's. It's not like Piplup being stubborn and prideful has anything to do with Dawn's personality. I think Turtwig is a good foil for Barry.
