This is something the newer gens unironically do better. There is no reason for Steven/ Wallace and Cynthia/ Rowan to let you do all the work, and the fact that you're the one who has to face the bosses and legendaries is nonsensical.
BW1 handled this better by you literally being the chosen one, + the story actually deals with the champ and gym leaders, plus it ties together your rival, gym/ E4 challenge and the villain team in a way only Gen 1 manages, which is more organic.
BW2 and XY are absolute shit but most of the villain operations there happen incredibly quickly and are fairly covert, which is at least a mild excuse. RSE does this better than Plat, Team Galactic is so fucking insane and obvious. SMUSUM is similar but there is actually no one in charge to handle this shit, and the closest things are either bonkers insane (Lusamine) or occupied during the climax (Tapu + Kahuna).
Obviously SwSh is the worst one yet for reasons I don't need to explain.
