Gen 2 is pretty good still, a lot of this stuff really bad if it bugs you that much personally, like the biggest issue for me is grinding, I like having well balanced teams, but all the pokemon you encounter are like 15 while I have fully evolved starter, it feels like it promotes only using one pokemon at times and I go in planning on what trainers to fight and hold off for later because of how low leveled wild encounters tend to be.
Good stuff about it is the region itself is better then Kanto, like Kanto is Kanto in name only, but johto feels a lot more like the place it's based on, which is why it's so much more comfy then most regions, it has culture to it and gen 2 in most cases is pleasing to look at, and it all translates to how the region itself is fun to explore.
Also milktank was never hard.
