The fans of other regions got cocky and made Johto as their designated whipping boy. No matter how badly things got for their own starters, they could take comfort in know would never the on the bottom of TPC/Game Freak's totem pole.
However, things have being improving for Johto since TPC/Game Freak started respecting it and all the people who built an identity on shitting on JohtoPokemon aren't happy.
There was a bit of seething when Meganium was the Illumina Pokemon, but that's a spin-off and doesn't have battles so they could at least take comfort in Meganium still being the "Worst Starter™". Plus Snap's audience was niche compared to the main series so its easier to ignore.
However, they can't cope with Cyndaquil being the Fire Legends starter because being in Legends is such a huge honor since it's Game Freak's first open world game. Also, because it has battles and Home connectivity Typhlosion and the other Legends starters could end up receiving buffs and people will be able to use Typhlosion with the intent of winning games. If Typhloision isn't the weakest fire starter anymore, who is? It's gotten the other firefans so scared that they've become mind-broken.
