I had the same thought, more or less. Gen 9 will not just "fix everything," but it could at least fulfill the potential that Gen 8 showed was possible but then didn't meet. We'll just have to see.

They are more interesting than the main game. The wild areas are actually a fleshed out open world this time.
But there is a fuckton of dialogues and cutscenes.

The DLC was pretty good ngl. It just wasn’t worth waiting 10 fucking months to get the full package.
What I believe : something terrible happened during development that forced them to redo working on the whole damn game. They had no choice but to cut this part and sell it as a DLC

It was obvious that shifting from 2D to 3D was a difficult task for them especially when - for whatever reason- didn’t want to extend the development cycle.
They did pretty good job all things considered, unfortunately they had to compromise the story and make it absolutely dogshit, forced themselves to work on ORAS shortly after then abandoned Z all together because they wanted a new gen on the anniversary or something.

Before I carry on : all my posts are personal speculation based on the final products. Because GF is not transparent with such info.
Gen 3 remake- similar to gen4 now - was highly demanded by the fans
so they went with it right away.
Sadly - as their new pattern dedicated- had to cut off fuck ton of stuff to meet deadlines. If you searched articles/ threads in 2014 and 2015 : there were signs indicated some sort of DLC / update.. unfortunately GF threw that shit out of the window as usual and moved on with gen7

One more to add : they stated in an interview the reason why they didn’t give Flygon a mega evaluation- like the other dragons - because they had an artist block.
