You want the real reason? Johtotoddlers are subconsiously realizing that their childhood games are becoming irrelevant, outdated trash like gen 1 currently is. They had a nice run and did bring a lot of QoL improvements that the community takes for grant it, but that was over two decades ago. No one cares anymore. The only real edge it has over over generations is that it has a two region gimmick. This was cool two decades ago but now as the community has matured, they realized how barebones both regions are along with other flaws. Newer players simply don't care how good it USED to be because they were 2 years old at that time. Sounds familiar? This is how /vp/ treats genwunner games (Oh well it was okay for it's time, but it's too glitchy and isn't modern enough to be a serious option to call the best of anything). This isn't about us. It's about Johtotoddlers needing to be honest to themselves. Say to themselves "Yes the overworld used to look cool and impressive compared to gen 1, but there's better out there. No muh soul is not an argument".
It's best not to clown them too hard though. You don't clown him for no getting rid of his old, busted and rusty car from 1950. He'll just lecture you to death about how much he used to drive in his car, how "they don't make them like they used to" and how ungrateful this newer kids are. You just accept that he's a coping old geezer who can't let go of the past. Defending and cherishing this car/game is incredibly important to him as this is his way of rebelling against the evils of modern society. So just just let him have his moments. Let him tell you stories about how fun his childhood game was. It'll make him stop screeching autistically and you can move on to doing more productive things with your time.

You posted why in your OP. People have have build an identity of shitting on Johto and the Pokemon from there can't cope that Johto is finally getting respect from Game Freak. Cyndqauil being a Legends starter is especially scary to them because there a bery high chance of the Cyndaquil line getting the buffs its deserved 20 years ago. If the other Fire starters can't shit on Cyndaquil, who will be the new punching bag? They've gotten so scared that they've become mind-broken.

How does this end? The same way it ended for genwunner when they were going through this phase. The Johtotoddler will finally have to accept that his time has ended and move on. Maybe find a new hobby and do something more productive himself. Eventually he'll realize that his time is up. For the grandpa this is usually when they die as they finally come to peace with their life and ready to let whatever happens happens as he trusts God's will for humanity. For the Johtoddler, it means finally leaving the franchise after decades of memories and embrace reality. Get a mortgage, find a wife and start working to become a normal member of society. He is no longer "Greg the Pokemon fan" as all his friends and family knew him. Just Greg the normal, humble man. Maybe he'll visit around to see the occasional hype season or nostalgic Pokemon Go-like fad, but never stay. He has transcended above us.

Tl dr:The Johtoman knows his time is ending, but is still in his denial phase

The Johto region

Funny how this simple location causes even the most stoic and keen zoomers on /vp/ to collapse into seething messes. They are enraged by Johto and begin their fruitless genwar posting only to lose each time to JohGODler scholars. A testament to the power of the Johto region. TONS of glitches fixed, mechanic repairs, and quality of life changes for the gen 1 games. Games BURSTING with content, the likes of which other rpgs could never compete with. ICONIC characters, locations, and monster designs like Tyranitar and Scizor. SOUL breathed into every pixel of the game. The PEAK of the franchise, by every definition by the word.

How was this even possible? Because Tajiri Satoshi understood what SOUL was. He knew what it meant to be a child and what a child's sense of wonder was. He was one of the few beings alive who was able to quantify raw SOUL itself to the point he could devise an equation. He had a vision with gens 1 and 2, and he achieved it. Every game not directed by this man is fanfiction. Corporate slop, and that is why no game can compete with Johto. Why was HGSS made? To return to this SOUL, even if just a little. Why was LGPE made? For a new Johto sequel in the works. Gamefreak understands they can only get anywhere with Johto.

Being a JohGODler scholar is hard, because you have to fight /vp/
But not being a JohGODler scholar is even harder, because you have to fight JohGODler scholars.

yes this is the peak of pokemon, but most steel types are peak quality so it's not saying much most are great and should be buffed to OU, I can't imagine any pokemon wanting to fight a Skarmory, they would give up just by looking at it, fully aware they will never be as cool.

Heracross, murkrow, magcargo, sneasel, chinchou, espeon, umbreon, octillery, quagsire, phanpy, marill, aipom, politoed, furret, ariados, politoed, all starters, just to name a few. They might not all be strong in battle but this was as you said the peak of pokemon design in this franchise

Are you asking why official social-media accounts are bringing up Johto all of a sudden? Probably because TPC is marketing September as Johto month as part of its 25th Anniversary Region Exhibit. March was Galar, April was Alola, May was Kalos, June was Unova, July was Sinnoh, August was Hoenn, September is Johto, October is Kanto, and November is the month BDSP is released. Unite is also releasing on iOS and Android later this month so they're probably going to oversaturate us with Johto advertisements for the first half of this month and then focus on Pokemon Unite.

I think we only need to look at Totodile to examine why this is. They keep the anime-style eyes, the basic and cute but not circular or soulless body and face so it looks adorable but still like a monster, and they add great detailing of contrasting colors that looks completely natural and yet also visually striking

You mentioned Politoed twice. I think you might have meant Kingdra the second time? I would've laughed at your inclusion of Magcargo and Ariados, but Ariados is actually a good niche Pokemon and I've used the Secret Code generator site in the past to get a Slugma egg from Primo at Violet City in Soul Silver and made it part of my team.
Although it's very frail due to its terrible typing and I'd would never even think of using it in competitive battling, it's a decent Pokemon in-game. I just don't know why they gave it such a weak Pokemon such an insanely high evolution level.
It's not that shabby at tanking physical moves that aren't super-effective and if you can set up a few amnesias it can serve as a physical and special tank.
I still wouldn't recommend using it of course, but Pokemon like Jumpluff and Magcargo can be fine choices for challenge runs.

I did this too last year, it was pretty bad but I really like magcargo so i kept it until kanto when i replaced it with houndoom
