You can't have AI doing so much stuff in the overworld.
Characters in the overworld acted with preset paths while an AI had to do all the work to move on its own and multiple Pokémon doing the same thing would stress the console.
We didn't have this until the Switch was a thing

Yeah about trainer customization, at the time it was a lot of work for the remakes and GF didn't even dare to do it in a main game. We only had it when it came on 3ds and the reason is because changing clothes on 2d sprites would be difficult if not static.

And competitive shit wasn't as big a deal for anyone except autists and series veterans until they streamlined it in, oh wait, Gen 6.
The only valid criticism is not being able to battle randos, but that's an irrelevant one today anyway because Wi-Fi's dead and anyone that wants to play Gen 4's meta is playing it on Showdown anyway.

For what it served in its time it was.
In terms of features you can only compare the games with its predecessors and in base of the enviroment the game is developed.
You can't get mad for a game that didn't introduce customization and overworld mons when they were later introduced on better hardware and in 3d.

Actually they could've, but the technology that they used at the time for trainers wasn't actual 3d models so they had to redo double of the job for outfits art in the shop and then on the trainer, while in 3d they just can reuse it and upscale it.
At the time was very unneccessary on 2d sprite also because less perceived, while on 3d models you can see it

It's an abstraction. You can only perceive the model in its entirety and just to know that you dressed like a Team Rocket character (it's all dressed in black infact, just a reskin of the original player), but if you put individual pieces you won't even notice them for how little sprites are which would make the concept of customization pretty useless.
Different thing is for BW that has taller models, but the problem is still the same, still sprites and still abstract.
XY instead gave complete detail with 3d models to the trainer and could easily be seen by the eye of the player, that's why they did it

No, the problem is not because it's too much work, the problem is that for the state things were it wad going to be pretty useless.
For christ they did 493 sprites of walking Pokémon and in Gen 5 all Pokémon animatione in battle, the problem is not lazyness, just priorities and if a thing was going to be worth or not.

Still this doesn't devaluate the entire experience that in terms of music, graphics, gameplay, story and content is one of the most polished ones (leaving the level curve out)

The level curve does still suck, and I think it's lame that GF didn't make such an easy fix. HGSS more than makes up for that flaw with its post-game content, though. Even in GSC, it's not like the level curve stopped the games from being fun, it was just an unfortunate shortcoming.
