Gen 5 was the first generation that had the gym leaders actually do something plot relevant on top of giving them a real place in the world instead of just making them sit in a room all day. Galactic had a fuckhuge base in Eterna City and all Gardenia was thinking about was the Old Chateau? Come on now.

Compared to who? I'd say Gen 5 gym leaders are right up there with Gen 7 and Gen 1 gym leaders, and Gen 1 gym leaders are only memorable because they're from Gen 1, they don't actually do anything either.

Giovanni is a gym leader in the loosest term imaginable. Wallace did nothing besides talking to Steven and sending the player into a gave, that's a world apart from someone like Clay who was extremely active against Team Plasma and all of Unova's gym leaders showing up at the game's climax..

Pokémon is set in a Demolition Man kinda future that when bad people use pokémon for evil they can't be deterred by police. Saffron city police was overwhelmed by team rocket and the citizens were left hoping for the elite 4 to come.

Indeed. In the manga even the Elite 4 joined the fight in the climax against Team Plasma.
Now we need the Elite 4 to do something in the games besides sitting in a room all day. Very few E4 members show up outside of the challenge itself

This, first time around it's pretty interesting, just like in gen 1 you see so many new things you don't know what they do or how they work.
I wouldn't mind if they tried that again, as long as older pokemon become unlocked at the end, or like B2W2, it's cool in a newer region but revisits should open the boarders up to oldmons.
