Can we have a thread dedicated to discussing romhacks and fangames? Not like /rheg/ where the focus is on development but the act of actually playing them.
Playing through Soothing Silver right now, pretty nice remake of HGSS

The first is a difficulty hack, the latter two are QoL hacks but Soothing Silver adds things like regional forms and is more updated

As for why its not brought up as much as Enhanced, the Enhanced dev is a Shockslayer tier lolcow and the game is shit. ROWE was actually made with care and community feedback

I joined the Emerald Enhanced discord to get the latest version one time and asked the dev if they could add in more music to the music player. They basically said adding in custom music is impossible and the people who have done it did it in a "special way" or whatever the fuck that means.
Basically i'm glad I was introduced to R.O.W.E so I can delete Emerald Enhanced and never think about it again.

Is there something I'm missing or is Squirtle just shit? Even in minimal grinding mode he's not adding anything to any team comp I try to fit him into, and random mons I can capture do everything he can but better.

You're meant to use more than a few mons anyway and all Squirtle is is just a mono water type with decent bulk and slightly decent special attack and speed. Things like Simipour, Kingdra, Lanturn etc. are more immediately impressive and better for longer (and then stuff like Wailord which is massively better)

but if you want advanced hacks, gen 2-3 are the way to go

Natures are a good mechanic since there's actually a notable difference between e,g, a Jolly, Adamant, or Mild Garchomp and valid reasons why you may want to use any of them. Natures just need a way to be easily changeable, not to be removed entirely.

Can be anything like jokes or balance changes, making shitmon more fun, Removing Lillie's text boxes. I want to play these games again, but I have zero reason to, so maybe rom hacks might make'em worth playing.
mainly SM/USUM I can't stomach the first island, and I give up after beating the first totem, shame because it has good parts.

Barren Black is a game that replaces USUM's mons with rebalanced Unova mons in a way that does a great job of making everything fun to use
Prismatic Moon/Photonic Sun are difficulty hacks of USUM which function like Drayano hacks, though probably harder, and rebalance everything
Penumbra Moon/Supernova Sun is a more vanilla game that doesn't give anything buffs but does make the game a lot more difficult
Stars is largely a meme hack but does some notable/funny things
There's only so much you can do sadly, if romhacking could remove or give the option to skip the cutscenes or edit the story events it'd be a lot better but all that can be done for now is editing numbers and text

Been playing through Clover, been lots of fun. Although I think I encountered a strange bug in the postgame, apparently there's supposed to be a Neo Team Karma encounter in Telekino but it never triggered for me when I went to that location. The game simply thinks I had completed that sequence already, so it's a bit weird.

Inclement Emerald has been pretty fun so far. Good variety of mons and the creator's added a lot of new, small, optional side areas so as not to bloat the regular routes too much. It's above the average Drayano style hack in difficulty without quite reaching RR levels, at least not yet.

Radical Red suffers extremely from giving strong moves to bosses that aren't available to the player yet.
It gets better eventually once you start getting access to the same moves, but until then it's pure suffering and you need to hard counter the boss' team each time. or just save state scum until you win

The TM move leaders gave you was almost always for a single move they had that you couldn't have yet. Radical Red is throwing multiple at you at once, and then handing you a TM you probably don't want as much.
For example, Falkner has the likes of Aerial Ace, but gives you roost, something which won't help you much since every boss has high enough BP moves to kill you in two turns. Misty's gym is filled with high power moves like Scald, but what you get is Flip Turn.

I'll never play something that looks silly, I have plenty of fun without hack comedy in my hacks.

I played Pokemon Glazed which was alright aside from the reddit swearing shit. Not really interested in games with fakemons either.

is it worse than reborn? right off the bat rejuvenation feels more like a shitty anime rather than a "DARK AND GRITTY AND MATURE" kind of thing.

i will say on one hand i love when fangames jump the shark but on the other hand rejuvenation had a shockingly strong start barring the shitty prologue and boat terrorism, and i like how every chapter feels like a little vignette about each respective area, giving it and its characters time in the limelight while putting their potentially radically different views against your existing allies you're used to.
maybe i'm grasping at straws here but it's a very nice system and something tells me everything will go to hot garbage soon and i'll regret every fucking compliment i've given it so far.

Playing through Soothing Silver, first time I ever played an "enchanced" hack.
There's a lot of pokemon variety so far. Which is great because in early vanilla HG/SS everything fucking sucks. Which made them really hard to replay on my opinion.
I'm having a blast so far, the only complain i have is that early gym leaders have late game evolutions that feel completely out of place.

Yeah, I meant like in battling, there's a lot of trainers who have different teams early on. A lot of variety on that regard.
Also, I'm gonna be completely honest with you, I haven't played HG/SS since release date so I don't know which mons are available on base game, I think the game just adds more Johto/Kanto mons on early routes. Which is how I think I got a Cleffa and Chansey prevolution. I could be wrong tho.
Hopefully the game gives me more options later on. Even though I'm liking the team so far. First time I ever used the Mareep/Cleffa line on a playthrough.

The difference is that Ocandia presents itself as a different experience than infinity. It basically just slaps its own ugly OCs into a well made map.
It's the Crystal Clear of Essentials, to an even worse extent, at least SHOCKSLAYER still considers itself as a crystal hack.

Starting in any town you want is pointless because wild encounter levels don't scale like trainers do.

And to create bad(artificial) difficulty, you put the player at such a disadvantage that the only way to succeed would be to cheese.
Giving snorlax 99999 health, max def/spdef, and a 0% catch rate isn't making the game more challenging. It's just forcing the player to poison stall after stealing the leftovers.
