>the games can survive without megasSure they can “survive” without them. But I’m not sure how much it means to survive without a core feature you introduced and then ripped away, one that provided so much potential for both progressing the battle formula, as well as balancing out older mons. Sure it would’ve also been nice if they just gave some of them actual evolutions, like sableye or absol, but even then some of the strategy comes from the timing of when to mega evolve (again sableye is a great example)
The only other way to balance old pokemon in the way megas did is just retconning their BSTs and that’s not a terrible idea either. But frankly, megas have already been introduced, it doesn’t make sense to ignore them forever now, I really don’t get the direction this series is trying to go if they just perma delete megas (I doubt this will be the case myself) - plus, admit it, they (most of them - I mean mega slowbro and manectric exist) were pretty cool
As for z moves, max moves are just worse versions of them. Every one of them has a secondary effect, which for one, distinguishes max moves from z moves and gives precedence to both existing separately, and being able to use z moves three turns in a row plus having boosted HP would’ve gotten the ire of everyone if that’s how they’d been introduced, and look what’s happened, dynamaxing is so absurd that people are now nostalgic for z moves across the internet.
