All competitors get their badges, run straight through victory road in all out survival of the fittest campaign and those that make it through get to fight the Elite Four. The anime didn't even hint at how you get to challenge the Elite Four until much later which was just another retcon on their part.
In the end, the anime is about as canon as Pokemon Adventures and any references they make to it in the games like Ash-Greninja or Steven teaming up with Ash's rival from XY is just cheap marketing ploys.
