Say you're looking to beat morty
If you want something with a type advantage, you're best off with a psychic, ground, ghost or dark type
For dark types, the only one available until postgame is umbreon, a friendship evolution you've just unlocked
For ground, you've got wooper, onix, geodude, and sandshrew, and nidoking/queen if you really wanted to grind one up and waste your one main game moon stone on it. Wooper doesnt learn any ground attacks until level 31 and sandshrew, nidoking, and onix don't learn any at all. So unless you wanna invest in raising a trade evolution pokemon just for one battle its not the best idea.
Ghost types are limited to the ghastly line, which you cant outspeed with unless overleveled to hell and is also weak to morty
For psychics you get girafarig, slowpoke, exeggcute (from trees), abra, and espeon. While they all learn confusion by level 21 every one except girafarig is weak to the ghost moves
Now say you want to beat allister. You have so many fucking options. You could use the route 1 zigzagoon shillmon that's also immune to ghost outright and evolves at a lower level than allister's ace. You could use the new impidimp line, or the other route 1 dark type who will also be fully evolved by now. You could use sneasel or skuntank or krokorok or drapion. And all of these pokemon have STAB moves available, most having access to endgame moves such as night slash at this point. That's not even half the dark types, and theres still ground, ghost, and psychic types to discuss
