Has Dawn with Turtwig been a thing since the start? I always pictured Dawn with a Piplup but I guess that's just because of the anime.

In the anime and manga, she usually has a Piplup. I don’t really know why Dawn and Turtwig started being paired up in art and media. It seems out of nowhere, but I don’t have an issue with it either way. I think piplup fits her personality more, though.

Dawns the less competitive rival, and consumers of the game are more likely to pick the fire type starter, so you end up with Dawn with turtwig and barry with piplup

When I played platinum the first time I chose turtwig just to make sure that dawn would choose piplup
