The chance for the series to remain 2D was doomed the second Nintendo announced that their next handheld would be the 3DS. Every first party game had to flog the gimmick.
We can't go back. There is no way people wouldn't view it as a downgrade. It has to be 3D, no matter how many features and Pokémon must be sacrificed.
My only hope is that maybe one day a third party developer who cares might be allowed to make a 2D side game. Small hope, but there is no way Gamefreak can keep up with Nintendo's demand for more frequent Pokémon titles, so maybe something like that can be pitched to fill a gap in the calendar.
