Imagine if this series was like Megaman (pre-X and zero series) and girls weren’t around much at all. The series doesn’t even bother with simple characterization or things like anime and manga and is just about gameplay beginning to end

HxH doesn't have that many girls in is/was popular.
YYH doesn't have many girls and is popular.
DB only has like 4 girls and is probably the most popular anime.
KHR only had like 6 womwn in total and was popular.
The Yakuza doesn't have many women and the few they have tend to be fuck ups, yet its popular.
Naruto does a horrible job with female characters that they might as well not exist and is popular

So yes it would be popular, people like to see characters beating the shit out of each other, doesn't matter if they're human or Monster and it helps that Pokémon are cute.

Did you watch any of the Mystery Dungeon specials?

Those were examples of Pokémon related works without human waifus involved. It's not like running the franchise without them hasn't happened before or is untapped potential. It has its appeal sure but it's not making numbers.

Eh, Pokemania happened at a time when the waifubait craze in anime wasn't as bad. People had waifus back then, sure, but people were vastly more interested in the Pokemon themselves.
That said... yeah, I could see a parallel universe where the games focused less on the waifubait stuff in the later gens and becoming a little less popular overall. Still not enough to break the franchise, but enough to make an almost noticeable impact in overall sales.

Considering I started back in the day with my own copy of Pokemon Blue, yeah probably. The anime sucks shit and always has, the manga is only memorable because the western versions were censored, and the only other material I can think of is the TCG (which is ass) or that old book that basically was a strategy guide in the style of a story book starring Red, basically a novelized Yellow I think it was.

The games are fun enough the first time through and it's always fun to see the new pokemon and build a team, even if mine usually wind up the same.
