Significant amounts of effort.
Not a Gen 4 fag at all nowadays, the issues with Johto and Sinnoh have been talked about plenty and I won't repeat them, but Gen 4 is by far the biggest, most "complete" generation.
HGSS objectively has a shitton of content, PMD, Pokemon Ranger, PokePark, so many movies, real-life events - Gen 4 was the biggest Pokemon has been and probably will ever be.

You're ignoring stuff like Pokémon Go and the TCG. and the merch! Pokémon games may mostly suck now, but there's so much useless plastic junk you can buy that it almost makes up for it.

Go and the TCG are big but that was more casual. Especially the TCG where more people just collect than play, especially at its height.

Gen 3 was bigger and the longest gen with the anime, gamecube spinoffs and movies mostly.

gen 4 had my pokemon ranch, rumble, and battle revolution and that was the end of the stadium spinoffs ever since. Was cool to use the DS lites and your cartridge teams as a controller tho, no other titles have tried that since.

The story is actually about helping your partner grow out of his insecurities and becoming a better person.
Literally everything else happening in the story doesn't matter and is just background dressing to drive this main point home, and that's why it works.

Writing more competent and entertaining than the literal baby garbage the main series gets, seriously it feels like half the dialogue in nugens is "WOW YOU SURE ARE A STRONG TRAINER"

I believe there is also SOVL to be found in using the world of Pokemon as a set piece for more interesting adventures than "catch pokemon, defeat gym leaders/island kahunas, become the champion" I think that's why the original Indigo league of the anime has so much SOVL, nostalgia aside, there are a lot of wild as fuck episode concepts alongside traditional battling, which really makes it feel like a more fun and interesting world to explore

I just realized you were talking about the original versions of explorers rather than RRT.
Yeah it was kinda bullshit that they essentially resold you a DLC pack for $60 but these days nobody really cares anymore, the price of the game is $0
