it shouldve been the shitmon mascot, stantler probably beat it out for not having any evolutions or pre evolutions and being a forgettable johtomon
at least stantler could be found natively in sinnoh though, and is in more sinnoh games than purugly is despite it being its home region

Purugly is one of those mons that is designed for NPC's to use rather than the player. Specifically to be a big tank that serves as the real "boss" of Valley Windworks. Yeah it's not actually very good, but it makes sure you've been learning your type matchups and making a team that can survive against a mon that isn't OHKO by your starter.

Yes. Despite what Smogon tells you Pokemon is primarily a single player game and is deigned as such. GameFreak designs many mons as "NPC" pokemon and not for player use.
Luvdisc exists to be a Heart Scale dispenser.
Hydreigon evolves after the game ends because he's supposed to be the final boss.
Onyx is the first boss.
A lot of pokemon exist to be "trash mobs" for you to blow through like gen1-4's early game bugs like Krikitune and Ariados.

82 attack is good enough for in game. I hate all these people trying to defend pokemon by saying it's a boss. It's perfectly fine already for ingame uses. It doesn't need to compete with Dialga and Garchomp.

The Johto starts are totally viable single player mons, especially in HGSS. Just because something isn't in Ubers doesn't make it bad.

Why do people who make shit up like this? Smogon acknowledges their rules and outlook are based on what they see fit for a competitive environment not as game design. It’s like everyone who complains about Smogon has absolutely no idea about what Smogon is besides what they hear from casuals.

Every pre gen 5 dex has those though. Gen5 was the first gen when GF made an attempt to make every new mon at least somewhat viable in single player. Sure Lizard may not be OU in Smogon, but he has a useful gimmick for single player. Gens1-4 have a lot of guys like early route Bugs that your supposed to replace as you play the game.

There is a huge amount, possibly a majority, of this board who think if you don't place OU in Smogon your a shitmon. Maybe UU if they're feeling generous. And that extend to a lot of people who play on showdown too, regardless if the people running the site agree.

Typhlosion is arguably much worse in HGSS due to the the Phys/Spec spit. It lost Flame Wheel (its main form of early game damage) and Thunder Punch, (it's coverage move that isn't Focus miss or weather-reliant)

True (a bit of an exaggeration though) but that’s not Smogon though. I’ll be the first to point on flaws with Smogon’s system but that’s on the players who have tunnel vision on how Pokémon work in regular gameplay vs how they work in a specifically structured competitive environment. My point is that Smogon never attempts to pretend their system is supposed to be how to look at the games’ campaign especially considering they have tier lists for that very topic.

And it was starting in Gen 5 they added hidden abilities which I think was a way to try to buff old Pokemon. And the next generation gave us stat changes, a new type, megas.. and then we just kept getting stuff ever since. Unlike maybe some people I do think that they are trying to help buff older mons in general
