It's been a while since I played Crystal but I remember it being optional.

As for HGSS, you're literally stopped in your tracks and forced to go somewhere else to face Lugia/Ho-Oh whereas in the original game there was no stoppage. It goes beyond a forced legendary encounter into a forced detour.

You HAVE to stop Kyogre and Groudon. It's a forced encounter and it belongs with "Bad game design." Fucking Hoenniggers always trying to be the exception when they're the foundation.

WRONG. You're only forced to battle Groudon and Kyogre in RS (which are on the right side of the image) whilst in Emerald you are NOT forced to fight ANY legendary. You simply must encounter Rayquaza (and even that is a challenge you have to figure out by yourself, rather than being guided down a hallway). Fighting Rayquaza, Groudon and Kyogre is completely optional, hence why it's in the middle in its own category.

From Lucas' design and the background, you can clearly tell it's Platinum so I don't get the issue.

How were you the chosen one in RB or GS? There's a difference between winning the game because you beat the enemy NPCs, and the game straight up fellating you and saying "omg you have such a close bond with your pokemon, the legendary has come down to personally kiss your ass" which is exactly what happened in HGSS.

That is, by definition, not required. Anything after the credits roll is just gravy. Plus you can leave them sitting there and go do whatever before actually fighting them, so its not even required then.

I think BW1 is the only case where it being forced feels fine. As the protagonist, you're literally destined to control Reshiram/Zekrom, while N commands the other. It isn't like Groudon, Kyogre etc. where it's just "Why are you catching this beast? W-w-well you have to!!"

The problem with HGSS is that the point of legendary encounter is not even being some savior that must protect world, Kimono Girls just needed one more person to bully and capture Ho-Oh/Lugia FOR NO GOOD REASON and decided that you will be the chosen one.

Like, the way how it was shoehorned made me mad enough to stop playing. If it was forced in intelligent way i would deal with it but basically it was all boiled down to bunch of chicks in kimono saying dragging you to legendary Pokemon's location and forcing you to capture it because they said so.

It'd need to be handled carefully. Facing a legendary early and beating it will diminish the grandeur when you finally catch it later. There'd need to be a plot reason to justify it being beatable & uncatchable at first, which could feel like a copout if not done well. At least with the beatable part you could claim it was weakened from something, or even have the player face it in a double battle, maybe with another trainer. But the uncatchable part would always feel cheap

They were fun for kids in RBY and GSC because it felt like you were actually accomplishing something by going out of your way to find them and capture them with full odds. All the forced legends Gen 3 and onward made them feel less special.

I agree. The dogs from swsh were also handled pretty well since you're only suggested to visit the post game area that starts the quest for them. Zygarde in X and Y is also a pretty good one, though not a box lego.

I'm fine with them being a time-released thing so people don't just rush through the games to catch them like any other legendary. Making them a limited-time only Mystery Gift that you pick up from the Pokemon Center is bullshit. If you buy a game later or start a new file on an older game, there's no legit way to get mythicals. I understand that this was a limit of the technology back in the GameBoy and GBA days, but there's no excuse for making mythicals have month-long windows of opportunity with Mystery Gift passcodes ever since the DS era where Pokemon games became wi-fi compatible. Just make them available to the player in a postgame sidequest via update.

Every game since Platinum has had legendaries respawn after beating the Elite Four. This complaint really only applies to RS and DP, games that force you to battle a legendary and the legendaries don't respawn.

Emerald and Crystal don't force you to battle any legendaries in the main story and in every game after Platinum you can just faint the legendary if you're not in the mood to soft-reset or throw 50 Ultra Balls.
