thinking about making a pokemon fangame (not a romhack, built from the ground up). which would you rather see?

>200 or so new original pokemon

Why not making a game just like Pokémon but without using the licence itself ? You could make money, like Nexomon creators.

Go the game freak way and think of a region (existing or new) and put pokemon that would fit in that region.

i thought about doing that, but if i'm going the existing pokemon route, i really want to go overboard and include every existing pokemon in the game. just so i can say a team of 4 making a game for free can do it but gamefreak themselves still can't

So...where are you going to put them where it wont feel cramped and/or out of place? Not to be mean, but what I liked about the pokemon games is the fact that they put some thought to pokemon placements and keeping it to the themes of the region, only adding more in after the game ended.

However, if you are doing a pokemon stadium type game where the region, story, placement isnt the focus then putting all 900+ pokemon should be simpler.

If you are that great, use an original concept in your game. If it gets popular, it would hurt Game Freak for real.
Hacks and Pokémon fangames actually favour Game Freak. If fans make good games then they can keep releasing shit.

my thought was to do something like gen 2, where the main game takes place in 1 region and after the game ends you gain access to another whole half of the map. i think i could make it work if i split it about 50/50

It kind of depends on the fakemon, I suppose. If the fakemon fit the tone of your game, then it could be a cool way to set it apart from other fangames. If you feel like it would deviate too much from the Pokémon "feel," then play it safe and stick to the originals. It's kind of hard to say without knowing anything about the story or gameplay.

The first one. A game with 200 fakemons (even shitty ones) is more interesting than yet another bog standard "HURR ALL THE POKEMON ARE THROWN IN AND THERE ARE 20 POKEMON ON EVERY ROUTE" game.

Theres no reason to make fakemon, you could just make a game and actually get money from your work, unless you want to make ironic fakemon or evolutions of existing pokemon.
Putting that many pokemon in one game is pointless unless you seriously intend to make enough areas to make it seem plausible all those pokemon can coexist in on limited routes. If youre going to just stuff pokemon on routes theres already games that do that, you might want to try and do something more creative, closer to colosseum or the battle frontier.

Absolutely the 200 fakemon. Taking the player away from familiarity and introducing them to new and interesting Pokemon adds a lot of spice to the game, and also ups the challenge as they have to learn about these new mons work. If you bloat the dex with old mons, most players are already going to know exactly how to counter and exploit them from the get go.
Also, trying to fit 900 Pokemon into a single region will cause a lack of cohesion. One shouldn't expect to go from one grassy route to another and have the entire ecosystem change.
