I always thought it was a byproduct of being revitalized, which for me also meant that they could've have a second type that was lost in place of rock type, for me that makes more sense than its all a coincidence that they were rock-type

The execution of this concept is shit. I'd rather have "generic" elemental dinosaurs than the existing nonsensical abominations, but ideally we would have gotten half-and-half monsters that fuse together in vaguely plausible ways, even if they still ended up with some dramatically out of scale proportions. I just can't stand the cross-section cuts on the Galar fossils that make them look like Play-Doh dinosaurs were cut in half.

Honestly I think the fossilmons might just be my favourite set of pokemon, I love every single fossilmon, with Aerodactyl being a particular favourite but they all have cool designs or nice lore/inspiration and yeah. Would have loved to go to that exhibit in Japan.

When a bone becomes fossilized there is no actual bone anymore, it has all been replaced by mineral. So you’re literally reviving a rock rather than any living tissue. I doubt they were rock types in their own time

Fossils in the early anime had a neat mystique to them. They were a part of the “rare Pokemon class” including stuff like Lapras, Farfetch’d, Ditto, etc. It’s hard to explain, but this idea isn’t really continued in future Gens aside from maybe Johto.

In fact it and Cradily are my favorite fossilmons, I just love how different they are to what you'd expect a fossil pokemon to be, not just your bog standard dinosaurs (don't get me wrong, I love dinos too) but something else from prehistoric times

I wonder what the OG types were of the fossil mons before fossilization turned them into part rock-type

Aerodactyl: is, since the mega-evolution lore came out, always been Rock-Flying
Omastar: would also make sense to remain rock-water
Rampardos: similarly would be mono-rock

Kabutops: pure-water or steel-water would fit

Cradily: water-grass
Armaldo: water-bug

Bastiodon: pure-steel would fit (also not make it as bad at defense)

Carracosta: pure-water or even ground-water, pokedex says it's shell was constructed from bone, not rock
Archeops: normal-flying or even pure-flying

Tyrantrum: dark-dragon seems like it would fit, or flying-dragon for feather memes
Aurorus: psychic-ice seems a logical type

I've seen a suggestion that it would be Electric/Ice. Makes sense due to how it can learn multiple Electric-type moves like Thunder, Thunderbolt, Discharge (egg move), and Magnet Rise (transfer-only from gen 7, egg move and tutor move). Also electrons being involved with the Aurora Borealis, so this isn't a "gen 8 fossil bad" thing.

Simple, one of Ice's new resistances is Ground so then Aurorus takes neutral damage from Ground. Would also benefit Arctozolt, Alolan Sandslash, and Galarian Darmanitan.

honestly Ice should resist Ground and Flying

giving it 3 resistances total, to good types, is a fair tradeoff for being weak to 3 of the best offensive typings in the game
doubly so because GF insists on making defensive ice types, and fairy having usurped it's dragonslayer status

Yeah I always thought it would be cool to have "origin forms" for fossils. Where they lose the rock type and either become monotype or gain a second type like a water/fighting Kabutops a dark/dragon Tyrantrum, grass/bug Cradily and bug/dragon Genesect.

well, megaerodactyl is a strong datpoint in that direction.
