Objectively they didn't. All of Steven's dialogue in his game is "hey heres an item for you to see kecleons goodbye", same for Cynthia who is the same but for psyduck and a little lore-dump. The less said about Diantha the better.

Steven has arguably the best character design in the whole games.
Cynthia is far, far more proactive, you discover Giratina's dimension with her and she has an actually unique signature Pokemon.

Diantha manages to be worse, but that's it.

The directing was surpisingly good though. The pokemon behaved like the wild beasts they are and there was an actual sense of danger. Eternatus felt like an actual threat that could kill Leon and co, something you wouldn't get from legendaries in the ashnime.

SwSh from Leon's perspective is actually an interesting concept. He sees potential in the player so he endorses him or her. He wants a real challenge for once. However, his hype may have gone to his head and he didn't actually expect to lose. It's just business as usual for Leon until Rose releases Eternatus and Leon is the one losing and being saved instead of being the hero. Then the person who stole the spotlight is going to be his challenger. At this point Leon started to realize but didn't want to admit he could lose a match for the first time in his life. He's only known victory until then. So the player confirming Leon's anxieties by beating him and becoming the new champion must have been a painful blow for Leon, but he held it together.
