I don't dislike Meganium, I actually quite like it, but I'm still sad it loses the big head leaf. Bayleefs attacks in the show were always cool like that

Think of it this way, Silver breaks in and steals a Pokeball. He doesn’t intentionally choose a starter he just steals a Pokémon and runs off.
Him having to come to terms with the fact that he stole the “weakest” of the 3 starters plays well into his character arc of overcoming the need to be the strongest in every regard.

Exactly, Silver could not choose his starter so he's left with whatever he grabbed first. This is also why his starter has no berry - player got a proper send off and Elm took care to prepare us for travel.

They aren't in the game but I do like how you have so many options to replace them with other primary elementals early in game(especially in crystal) They don't stand out so your early team doesn't just feel like filler carried by your starter and one other maybe.

Totodile is the best Basic Starter in the franchise. It's kid of sad it doesn't have any competitors in Johto, whereas in Kanto every starter is iconic - Cindaquil and Chikorita are blobs that grow into bigger blobs.
