Pokemon, like everything else that we percieve are ideas. It was “good” in that it changed up the status quo play style of the series and emphasized double battles. Most of the other aspects of the game (like the awkward time wasting of purifying shadow Pokémon) and the Sid the sloth eyes of many characters ruined it though. Among other things.

It depends on the style and series, since one size doesn't fit all and some Japanese creators are adopting more of a global mindset than their predecessors. That isn't to say creators like Toriyama or the people who did draw things like early Pyuunma or Jungle Kurobe should be erased from history, but it's definitely a creative choice that's not favorable due to some finding the designs to look clownish and othering even if those design choices are exaggerating features known to stand out. Even if one defends it by saying it's realistic, then that argument still ignores how the Japanese and sometimes Europeans in anime don't commonly have caricatured looks (though there are apparent cases like Iyami from Osomatsu-kun playing on Asiatic features) outside a few exceptions.

The bottom line is how people want to be represented (fairly) can have more than one idea since not everyone thinks the same. There are black and brown girls who can point to Nessa and say "she's just like me" whether they're actually correct doesn't matter that much in the grand scheme of things. There's much bigger things to worry about than "correcting" them.

The definition of a ‘gimmick’ seems to vary from person to person.

Like wonder trade is definitely a gimmick but is at this point something fans were able to turn into a bonafide game mechanic for challenge runs and such.

Megas, Z-moves and D/Gmax are central mechanics for the games they debuted in but can be considered ‘gimmicks’ due to being dropped for a new one

Then there’s the ‘overworld’ ones like sinnoh underground, pokeradar, entralink, dexnav, wild area… ones that some players get mad were dropped despite the new mechanics being more of a lateral move with the same end result (HAs, raised shiny chances, items)

Typhlosion’s movepool is proof that isn’t that case. This is beyond not having a special movepool, it doesn’t even get bare-bones basic moves like Swords Dance so it can’t function as a physical attacker despite 95% of its moves (including its island scan move) being physical.

That was gen 2. They had no fucking idea what they were doing at the time when it came to balance. The same reason gen 3 is riddled with Pokemon who have high attack AND special attack eating up a huge chunk of their BST, so most of their stats are shit. They do need to go back and update those Pokemon eventually.

When I talk about "gimmicks," I primarily mean "battle gimmicks." The one-off battle tricks with a temporary place in the game, which don't do anything meaningful to the way that battles are held other than being an effective super super-move/super-form.

Generational features like the underground, radar, etc, impact the feel of playing through the game that they're in, but not the core RPG battles that cross through all of the games. To me, it's sometimes disappointing when some of the more basic ones are left behind, but it is what it is.

As for Wonder Trade... it's a quirky little feature, but not necessarily a bad one. I agree that it has come into its own niche in the playerbase/fandom.

This is preceisly it the Phys-Special wasnt an improvement. As best the change was lateral for every pokemon that got slightly better there was another Pokemon that because worthless. It punish Pokemon for having two decent attacking stats since there is no reason for there Pokemon to use their lower attacking stat. Before Pokemon needed both attacking stats in order
The only real argument for the phys-spec split is that it makes sense, but there are moves like Grass Knot or Wring Out were even this logic fails.
Ironically Pokemon Go is actually better designed in this regard (Pokemon have their physical attack and special attack blended into a single attack stat, the higher attacking stat is weighted more (7 to 1), it still favors minmaxed mons but at least the lower stat isn't completely worthless
