Alola actually had pretty good route design. What brings it down is how linear the gameplay is.

it’s not more linear than gen 4. There’s fuck all to explore in gen 4 beyond old chateau, fuego ironworks, and wayward cave which is about on par with what gen 7 has.

Though linearity isn’t as bad as people here make it out to be. Like yeah wowwww you can do gyms out of the intended order for a sudden difficulty spike but now you have a couple gyms and routes you’ll just steamroll over since you’re 10 levels higher than you’re supposed to be at that point

In DP (not Plat) Sinnoh, once you get to Hearthome, all of eastern Sinnoh opens up for you, and you can do Wake and Maylene in any order. In Alola, everything is railroaded with retarded roadblocks and those fucking stupid Trial Gates. There is not a semblance of non-linearity in Alola.

Johto and Sinnoh worked around this by essentially capping the EXP gain until you get to the linear part again.

it's not a worthless metric because poni canyon is the only alola area that's actually somewhat of a sizable maze, meanwhile gen 3, like all of the older ones, has several of them

People want adventure, or if that cant be delivered, the illusion of it

Hoenn feels like you're travelling the land, and that maybe youll find a secret path or gap between rocks you could surf through and discover more out there

Alola feels like a theme park, and it feels too safe with your path roped off into a predertimined way.

But that has been true since gen 5 and 6. I'm replaying XY now and as far as the power plant there hasn't been a single route or town that isn't interrupted by some cutscene before I can enter and/or leave.
