Even if they're cringe, janky, and nonsensical at times, just the fact that the structure was more than: arrive in city -> battle gym leader -> go to next route -> it's a straight line -> arrive in city -> battle gym leader made them a vastly superior experience and made Sword & Shield look incredibly lazy by comparison.
