They're the last semblance of a good concept the series has.
Pokemon ended when they started doing regional gimmicks in Gen 7 and gave them precedence over things like the National Dex.

In concept giving shitmons a boost was cool
In practice it ended up being a nightmare that lead to the primal reversions and mega fug alongside making a number of already good pokemon into brainlet tier win buttons.
I liked the concepts and executions of z moves better. Concept a lot more, execution barely so.

Giving weak mons a boost was never the concept. Some of the first megas revealed were the shillmons like Mewtwo and Charizard. They were clear about what the intention was from the start.

I don't think it fits in Pokémon. Also Gen 6 was the beginning of the drastic decline in quality of the games. It started off so well, then after Cyllage you get rocketed towards then end. I wish they delayed it to work on it more, but oh well.

This. Mawile was the only shitmon among the first revealed megas. It's honestly surprising as many shitmon got megas as they did when Mewtwo was technically the first to be revealed and XY focused on Lucario being the first to ever mega evolve.

They're shit designs with like three exceptions
They're just the same lazy Shonen Power Up gimmick that Z-Moves and Gigantimax (which both also suck) are.
They're unnecessary, either give stuff like Absol an evolution or guys like Beedrill a buff.
They're an excuse to give us fewer new Pokemon each generation. Just like regional forms (which also generally suck 9 times out of 10).

They started doing regional gimmicks in gen 7 because the poor reception of the mega gimmick made them rethink whether they should commit to gimmicks. Megas are in spirit the first regional gimmick and are directly responsible for the others being limited to one generation.
