The biggest problem was his side cast was mostly lame annoying and felt more in the way than enjoyable, mary asui was too good at everything until the last arc where they needed someone to lose to guzma, i mean some people are better at things than others but she felt generally good at everything she did and barely ever failed at anything ever.
Kaki was alright except for two things 1. His baby sister obsession 2. Annoying temper tantrums. His team was great but i wish they did better with his family. Same goes for most the side characters on that note but particularly his family was highlighted more so the interactions were in the spot light and they never really clicked well during the episodes about the farm life they could've done better i think.
Lilly is annoying the entire series and every episode about her has been done to death a million times in other series so she just comes off as a more prudish annoying rich girl. Alola tried to do character progression for each cast member which worked to some extent but the problem was that no character ever had enough progression to justify wasting time watching them go through their struggles to begin with.
Her brother is the green power ranger of this series he's a redeemed edgelord who does his own thing. it was cool to see them highlight different balls in his kit but that's something they should do all the time always anyways. I hated his shill mon and i felt he cheated when he threw items for his mon to hold mid round so that his steel type wouldn't lose to the fire z move because im pretty sure in the games you can't just use the item on him you have to have him hold it before you start the match.
