What's your opinion of HM Slaves? Do you use them or do you just teach them to your main party? What are your favourite slaves?

I don't like HMs in general. Turning a mon into an HM slave hurts party diversity, which was a problem exacerbated by Sinnoh's pretty pisspoor type distributions.
Hope BDSP implements something close to Alola's ride feature or adds special items to handle HM usage for you.

Better idea is for every HM slave to be buffed if needed, like Tropius.

Whether or not HMs are going to be relevant again, there's no excuse for Tropius to have shit stats.

when I played Diamond as a kid, I think my party was just Empoleon (surf/strength/rock climb/cut), some level 16 staravia freshly caught for fly, and Dialga. screeching about movesets is stupid, it takes almost nothing to shit on the League

Never used a dedicated slave, only mons that I want to use.
I'm not using all 24 moveslots for optimal moves all the way through a playthrough, this isn't competitve. If one of my members needs Whirlpool/Cut/Rock Smash/Flash for a while just to get through a mandatory roadblock, so be it. An added bonus is Water mons actually getting good moves out of HMs like Surf and Waterfall.

I never use HM slaves. The one time i tried in Gen 4 i ended up just raising the Bidoof. I spread the moves around my party, it's really not a big deal.

I just teach them to party members. See, it wasn't so bad in gen 1 when you only needed 3 and 2 of them were decent moves. Then it just got worse and worse

Not really. Using HM Slaves aside from an early shitmon you can teach cut and flash has always struck me as weird. By the 5 or 6th gym you'll have a full team and you don't even use all 4 moveslots of your mons. Having 5 or 6 moves to spread out among them was never a big deal to me and I was surprised by how much people hated them when I first started discussing Pokemon online. Never been a big deal to me, even in Sinnoh.

Just use my team. The biggest road block is ending up with a water type using three HMs at any one time in HGSS particularly. Whirlpool doesn't come up often but still seems redundant when you already have Waterfall as a roadblock.

My main issue with HMs is honestly trying to play without a flying type, or having flying types that can't learn Fly.

Yeah Strength is actually useful in Gen 1/2 because its just slightly weaker than take-down with no recoil. Fly's not terrible either. Its just Gen II onward added so many subpar HM moves.

I've never minded HMs, never use a slave, it's easier to spread them around the party. Don't know why people act like HM slaves are required.

Usually whatever Water type I'm using becomes my Surf/Dive/Waterfall/Whirpool travel companion. Same for Fly with a Flying type or Dragon. If I need a specific HM I can always just prepare at a PC, it's not a big deal.

There are solutions to HM improvements but I would rather have them than theme park rental Ride Pokemon

Fuck no. PikaVee already fixed the issue entirely.
HM slaves were a product of the HM moves requiring a slot and being shit. If they don't take slots like in LGPE then there are no HM slaves.

Gen 2 was kind of hard because whirlpool is a shitty move, yet I need it if I want to cross some sea parts.
Also, it's fucking dumb to me that I can't teach waterfall to my Feraligatr when he is a water type.

BDSP should create a "Battle Box" where you can put a Pokemon that can learn the move in and it will use it without it taking up a party or move slot.
That way if you have something in your party it can do it like LGPE, but if you don't then it will use whatever is in the box.
