What's the point of the old rod/good rod?

never understood the point of having 3 different rods except to trick new players into catching a magikarp, what a garbage item.

having a item just to get 1 pokemon is pointless, gen II foward you could find water pokemon in grass so no point, and in gen I the good rod you get later than the super rod, so there is no point

In Gen 1 it's meant to reward exploration. You find the best rod by the docks, on the route most players avoid because it takes longer.

I always avoid the old rod on repeat playthroughs, because the first gen pc only has 50 slots a single item makes a big difference

It's not pointless, it exists so that players can catch different pokemon at different points in the adventure you fucking mong, it's meant to scale with your progress, and make it so only those who actually fucking bother exploring can get certain pokemon

I hate the bicycle music in Gen 1 so much that I always take the long way instead of Cycling Road. As a result I always get the Super Rod before the Good.

The old rod is basically a joke item in gen1 since it only reels level 5 Magikarp. It's a tutorial to fishing at best.
It's slightly more useful in later gens where it can let you catch some Pokemon relatively early, like Tentacool.

Its still fun to me, besides I replayed it before most of this board was even born. The game takes a day to playthrough, many people bought multiple versions, and there was 2 years between it and GS, then another 3 years until RSE.

Nope. Even though it gets no physical STAB in gens 1&2 it still hits like a truck with that incredible physical stat. Then for obvious reasons it is only gets better from gen 3 onward.

Wtf would you put flying stab on it? The flying type on it is literally there just make it an 'almost dragon' type. You put waterfall on it for phys stab when it can get it, then coverage/high damage moves on it. Hell it's attack is so high it makes leer viable.

Why not? Flying/ground coverage is really good, and it's not like Gyarados was ever hurting for moveslots.

The Old Rod was almost exclusively for extra Magikarp and players who had guides to know if they had a chance to fish up anything else, the Good Rod's for actual water types worth a damn if you try fishing in different areas, and the Super Rod's the same thing but with higher levels and evolutions.

I do see the perk if you don't want to basically have to slot a ground type and have fly type overlap. But taking all that time to find a Gyarados with HP fly would be much better spent just keeping it a physical tank with no stab or surf at best in gen 2. Then having a high special, non normal secondary typing, flier if you want that and a ground type to make up for electric weakness.

Because the Old Rod was designed as a punchline gag item in Gen 1.
You get it thinking you can finally find more Water Pokemon worth a damn in case you weren't stubborn enough to raise Magikarp into a Gyarados, but LITERALLY all you find is even more Magikarp.
