You can see grey patches underneath the purple markings/plates from weathering, meaning that the purple color is either some kind of dye or paint.
Just look at the texture of the entire surface, the "fur" only occurs at the borders of the purple markings/plates. All the other material surrounding it isn't fur, but some kind of rough surface.
If it was fur then the whole thing should be furry. It wouldn't make sense to just have fur at specific spots, just at the borders of the markings.
