blue legitimately has some of my favourite development of any pokemon character, i love seeing where he is and how he's changed whenever he pops up again, so satisfying to see this competitive, cocky kid really grow into a matured and chilled out mentor figure

They’re just regular guys around the age of older players. They aren’t super manic about Pokémon like most modern characters. Their rivalry is based more off each other than Pokémon. Like if Pokemon didn’t exist Blue would need to prove himself over Red in some other way.

Blue’s occasional melancholy ruinations are also fascinating. We see him go from being a cocky upstart to to being humbled badly. Later years we still see he has a cocky streak but when you get more dialogue he’s still just finding his place in the world. He still has that wanderlust which is why he takes over a gym that was rarely open, so he can go out and explore and brood. In S/M he gloats when you pick to battle him because he still clings to the brief time he was champion.
