You're not only wrong but double wrong.
1, gen 1 saves last far longer than gen 2 saves like >>48226377 says, mine is over 17 years old.
2. I did replace the battery but it's the same save file, the trick is you take off the lid off the cartridge, put it into a gba sp, and replace the battery while the game is running, when the new battery is saudered in, save the game and it's done, which is what I did last year when I found the old Yellow cartridge
