Since Ash, Misty and Brock all have Mega's now it's a great injustice May doesn't have one. Of course she'd have Mega Blaziken 100% if she appears again but we may never see that in canon. The fact that May is "falling behind" Misty/Brock honestly gets my goat, May now needs something to put her above Misty/Brock again. A Mega Blaziken and a Gardevoir should do it.

"Falling behind" lmao. She was never in their league. May is just another companion. She isn't the first companions and starred in the most memorable series. She is just one of Ash's many companions over 20+ years. It is hilarious how much Scott projects. Well I also meant "falling behind" in terms of powerful pokemon. The anime portrays Mega's as much stronger than normal pokemon, so May having a Mega Blaziken would make her look more impressive on their level again.

And honestly, I'd wager to say May and Dawn at least are just as iconic now as Misty/Brock. The fact that May became more popular than Misty with the original fans in the early 2000's and that's why the writers didn't bring Misty back to the cast says enough.

Neither May/Dawn are as iconic as Misty or Brock. They just aren't. The people who like them are people who stuck with the anime after the fad wore off. Casuals, who came back for Go, only watched the OS and young kids watching Pokemon do not care.

May was never as popular as Misty. The vast majority of the polls have Misty ahead of May and the voters in those polls are usually die hard fans, so May should do better if she was as popular as you say she is.

Also, this has zero to do with popularity lol. Misty didn't comeback because show was about shilling gen 3. May was going to stay regardless of what happened.

In Japanese polls Misty only got a boost after her SM cameos aired. Prior to that especially from XY and before Misty was all but forgotten in the Japanese fandom. Those SM cameos really boosted her popularity again because prior to that she was barely above Iris as second least popular.

Back when AG was airing May was at the height of her popularity (obviously, she was a main character then), and the writers initially stopped Misty's cameos when AG was airing, which they never would have done if Misty was too popular to be ignored. AG134 was probably originally intended to be Misty's final episode of the series until the 20th anniversary fell during SM.

It'll never not be funny that May is chronologically stuck between two girls that are immensely more popular than she is. Scott listen, you know that May is my favourite but I have to admit that May is the second most irrelevant companion after Serena. There are not much use for her outside of rooting for her father on PWC or building a love triangle between her, Drew and Ash.

Original characters are always iconic and bring more profits as shown with original Digidestined's popularity over their replacement on Digimon . Misty and Brock are more beneficial than other companion specially if they maintain their original personality & dynamic. Ash's homebase is Vermilion city on Kanto which means Misty and Brock can return as supporting character like Team Rocket Trio as long as they has a flying pokemon as their ride pokemon.

Ash , Goh and Chloe's dynamic is not good enough to carry the show. The studio should acknowledge this now and use Misty & Brock as their secret weapon.

Dawn is there to represent the modern female companions so I don't mind what they do with her. For some reason though it seems like the writers don't really care about giving Dawn any new Pokemon though, since her team has remained the same since 2010. Even when she shows up again in November I doubt she'll have anything new when we see her other pokemon.

Only the Zapdos was weak as shit for some reason. Moltres was shown at the level legends usually are, it brushed off all attacks and only got shocked by the double Thunderbolt from Pikachu/Electrivire and quickly flew off.

I guess you can headcanon that Zapdos may have been a younger version.

Max never really felt like Ash's friend that much per se. He was May's brother first of all and more of Brock's friend as far as I remember. I definitely remember when I watched Pokemon Advanced Battle as a kid Max was autistically bitching out at Ash because he won against Max's dad and that's when I thought : "Wow, this Pokemon cartoon is legit deep stuff". Also I perceived the animation as being WAY MORE high quality at the time, now when I rewatch AG it seems duller (?) for some reason but in a kino way.

SM is pretty good also so I don't see why you brought that series up out of nowhere, there's a number of things characterisation wise SM does better than some past series. AG just suffers from a lot of the same filler formula carried over from Johto, but thankfully there's less of them and some Hoenn fillers were pretty funny.

Yeah, there are two episodes in SM when Brock and Misty return you can google them out using the Bulbapedia (Pokemon fandom wiki) website. Watch those episodes and that's it for Brock and Misty. Although they got RUINED beyond recognizability because of the crappy artstyle shift

Besides maybe Dawn, I wonder if we'll get any more old main character returns for the rest of the year. I originally thought Cilan or Bonnie/Clemont were being set up to appear soon, but I don't know if we'll see them this year.

The only problem is the executives didn't want Ash to win the league for whatever reason. It's obvious Yajima would have had him win. It's really the only flaw of the tail-end of the series.

Greninja losing to Mega Charizard X 3 times in a row is not how the show usually operates. Whenever Ash loses to a rival and a Pokemon continuously he gets a big victory over them in the league. So obviously something went wrong here.

The wrong that somebody with enpugh authority self inserted himself in the show as Alain and force the studio to pander himself. The show could have postpone Kalos League final due to Team Flare crisis and have Ash defeat Alain on the parade just like player defeat AZ. The problem was that the executive or director didn't wanted Alain to lose.

Every decision they made on XY and XY&Z series was based on how it benefits Alain.

It's just their unique defense card. By this point onwards, many of the arguments made to defend SM have been either debunked by fans or destroyed by the anime itself (like animation not really improving, since it's very standard compared to other series), so these fanboys have to come up with brand new "arguments" to white-knight the series.

Admittedly, I don't really think they believe their own arguments, because, as you point out, they never did the same thing for past series despite aiming for the same crowd as Journeys, not to mention, they're very sensitive in spite of their smug attitude, like, if they're so confident that Pokémon is so immune to all criticism because it's a kodomo, then why make such aggresive comments on 4chan like this?

If they genuinely believed that shit, they'd imagine that defending the series is pointless because criticism isn't gonna affect the series at all.

So why was the new anime called Pokemon Journeys (similar to Johto Journies) instead of Masters (similar to Master Quest).
It's essentially an anime adaptation of Masters if the trainers in Masters were competing in the BW's PWT

PM has shown that it's good at bringing back past characters, but not so good at bringing back past pokemon. In PM7, Ash uses Mr. Mime instead of any pokemon from Oak's lab. In PM30, Ash goes to pallet town, a perfect opportunity to visit the lab in the next episode, but doesn't. Even in the episode where they do come back, the episode felt rushed and the part with Oakmons is quickly brushed aside in favour of Gary/project mew. I don't think there ever will be because Ash is a Champion already. He's already one of the strongest trainers in the world when he pulls out the big guns. If he gets beat we all know he was handicapping himself the entire time.
DP went out of the way to show that for all his accomplishments Ash was still a little fish. He beat Brandon but Brandon can't compare to the Sinnoh Battle Frontier. He lost to all the E4 he faced and struggled with Paul, another x3 league loser. Tobias stomped him pretty hard with his BF team but he managed to KO two of Tobias Pokemon.
Here he stomps Iris and Volkner while handicapping himself . The battles were fun but did you ever expect Ash to lose if he used his strongest mons?

I think they doesn't fully understand the dynamic between straightman and funny man. Because they focused so much on making Ash and Goh look like the best bro that they forgot to develop a straightman and funny man dynamic.

Just look at actual straightman & funny man dynamic like Kanata and Kagami from Lucky Star.

Honestly I hoped Chloe to be the straightman like Kagami considering she was shown to be total opposite of Ash but the anime decided to turn her into another "Lillie".

There is no reason to ship Koharu with Ash outside the possibility of Koharu growing up to look more like her mother. Currently I am stuck between choosing Misty, Dawn or Korrina.

I ship Ash with girls based on three things --

1. How would they look as an adult
2. What kind of dynamic they have with Ash
3. What purpose they have in the show.

Unlike the others I can imagine her having a good relationship with Ash and it is not limited to just being "his" girl like your average Hinata, her relationship would be one of friendship, siblinghood, and rivalry. With occasional flirtations and teasing between the two of them not being exaggerated as they were both very clumsy with that, it would basically be a Leon and Raihan, but straight!

Unfortunately Korrina's dynamic with Ash is not as good as Dawn or Misty. However in Korrina's defense, XY Ash was too devoid of character to have any good chemistry with other characters.
