GF really struck gold with double batting in RSE but never used it to its fullest potential, or even regularly implemented it, after Generation 4. I would kill for another campaign based around double battles.

A game revolving around double battles first and foremost would need faster animations. Their pace is fine in hacks when you can crank the speed up to infinity, but are otherwise prone to tedium.
The next change they'd need would be in the mechanics department. Universal moves like FO and Protect ought to be broken up into several, nicher moves; Pokemon may need more abilities curated to 2v2 e.g. for survivability (two abilities?)

There already are niche versions of protect for double battles though. Two abilities for each Pokémon on the screen sounds kind of awful, nobody wants to keep track of 8 abilities at the same time.

Wideguard is exactly the type of universally applicable move that would break a SP, doubles-focused game.
Humans can dummy the AI even more in double battles, so a game in which players build their whole team for this format would be exceedingly easy, prohibitive, or would have to feature unique doubles-focused mechanics.

i'm trying to make 2 doubles hacks. it's going ok I guess. I have issues playing with the new toys like cfru or owm but the basic scripting is fun.

This. Pokemon doesn't even explain half it's battle mechanics in-game. Things like how specific moves like rain dance/thunder interact make sense to leave for players to discover for themselves, but the fact that combos like that exist should be clearly stated. Hell, even as a player since Yellow if I didn't look it up I'd have no idea which types were physical and which were special before the split in gen 4 and I didn't even know it WAS type dependent until it was explicitly said to be changed during gen 4 leak/post-Japanese launch season. The fact that there isn't at least a training facility that goes into the deeper mechanics that you don't really need for single player, let alone a campaign based around mastering the battle system so that by time you become champion you've earned it as opposed to getting lucky with rng or abusing items or overleveling, is a shame. It may be a kids' game but if anything that means it should be going the extra mile to make the information accessible in-game rather than expecting players to go online or bang their heads against the wall to figure everything out before they even start playing around with strategies.
