Was setup to have Celebi in it that would follow Ash around Johto for a while and possibly go back in time and get his father involved if the dubbers were to be believed, but it was scrapped in favor of putting Celebi exclusively in the movie because marketing and Celebi toys.

I thought it was some ancient artifact that would unlock magical powers or a portal to another world, to me it looked like the weird golden spoon and dreidel-looking thing from the episode with the gigantic Gengar and Alakazam. I never thought there might be an actual Pokemon inside, I just thought it was some kind of valuable or ceremonial object. I didn’t get to play any Johto games until late 2002 with Crystal and when I was playing I thought it would be cool to find a connection with the Ruins of Alph/Unown, but by that time the GS ball plot had been long since dropped and the Entei movie had come out, so I knew it wasn’t gonna happen.
