Are you glad BDSP and Legends seem to be a return to form?
It's been two generations, in that short period we lost

Backtracking is built into the map for Route 15 and 16. Events in Lumiose open up and trecking through that path unlocks the shortcut that can be used to get back to Dendemille.
Not to say that Gen 6 isn't linear. But there is a degree of agency given in the exploration that every game past Platinum had despite also being linear.
Linearity isn't a strictly bad thing. Lack of agency is, as was the problem with SM/USUM/SWSH.

I wouldn't call it a good return if a worse version of the previous game is what brings back exploration. Legends however doesn't fit any of these examples and we still don't know everything yet. The fact that the game isn't truly open-world should make that more than clear.

Personally more invested into how BDSP turns out. A more "faithful" remake sounds more appealing, because I miss tile overworlds and the complexity they had. With XY, the Alola games, and SWSH, GameFreak has proven to me they aren't able to do interesting, complex routes in nu-3D games, opting for more linear hallway routes.

I truly do not give a fuck if little Timmy gets lost in Mt. Coronet, keep that shit the way it was. Do not turn it into an ORAS Dewford Cave situation.

Overall, BDSP so far looks decent. I do miss Contests and the Underground with people. The new additions of the Plat dex mons in the Underground is cool. I wish it had a full Nat Dex or at least every Pokemon in the code, but I know that won't happen among other concessions, so I'll begrudgingly accept that. I understand if others here don't want to buy it for those reasons and I don't blame them. Everyone has their lines in the sand. Thanks for coming to my autism talk.

Unironically the worst parts of Gens 1 and 2 are the "open world" aspects that clash hard with the JRPG structure. I think Gen 1 was trying to imitate the late game portions of the SNES Final Fantasy games and Chrono Trigger, but it's slightly botched by the limited Pokemon pool making most of the optional content a chore. And Gen 2 plays the cards way too early in the middle of Johto when Kanto would have been a better time to go all in on the structure, negatively impacting like a third of Johto just so you can beat Pryce "early". I could extend this to the borderline experimental water route design in Gen 3 but I dunno the rest of the game more than makes up for it. I'd personally look to a more linear game like Xenoblade 2 when it comes to overall map design. Also, BotW is worse than the first Zelda structurally, although even I'll admit it's a very mechanically interesting game and I'm interested to see what the sequel does.

It's not about what flaws the game has, it's about design philosophies, hardware based design decisions, and in a more general sense how the games are perceived by most people. Basically, by all accounts Gen 5 fits more with Gen 4 than it does Gen 6. Gen 5 is definitely a more transitional title though.

Then why are the badges listed in a particular order? Similarly, the game sort of expects you do to things while you're in the area, skipping gym leaders just makes them easier when you come back to them later. It's more like Link to the Past than the first Zelda, the former requires some things in order well before numbered dungeons show up (and even when you can do a few of them out of order most of them are in order still), the latter has like 3 dungeons that require specific orders, 5 if you count "a fire source" and "bombs" I think.

No? Even though Gen 6 and 7 are running on different engines, they do have a lot more similarities than differences. That does somewhat come down to the same hardware though, I'll admit. Heck, I'd argue Gen 7 is a step up in a lot of ways.

That's not what we were talking about, we were talking about the similarities between the games. BW is more like DP or even RS, regardless of the qualities of any of those games. Similarly, XY is more like SM and SS, regardless of the quality of any of the above.

Let me ask you something, what's the difference between Majora's Mask and the Oracle games? Super Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros. Wii? What's the difference between Final Fantsy 13, 14, and 4 Heroes of Light? Now, is the difference between BW and XY more subtle than the above, probably. But there's still a pretty big difference. If you want another example from JRPG history, FF6 and 7, despite some massive similarities, are also vastly different in a lot of other ways.
