Gen 2 might as well have you start in Kanto and run through the game as normal with only tweaks to the gym leader makeup and level. That's about as much "new content" the game has in its main story.

what personality? the only memorable gym leader team was Whitney because Miltank was actually good in a game where every gym leader had a team 5 levels below the previous game. If you want gym teams that had personality, every game has done it better at least once

Gen 1 had Brock use Bide to teach people not to mindlessly attack, as well as Koga's Toxic stall strats and Sabrina's OP Psychic types
Gen 3 had Norman's bullshit stat tanks and Winona's Dragon Dance setup sweep
Gen 4 had Candice's hail setup for Frostlass
Gen 5 had Elesa's Volt Switch spam
Gen 6 had... not anything really. They atleast had a gym leader with the new type, which was not horrible
Gen 8 actually had gym leaders make use of the new gimmick, something X/Y shouldv'e done

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the only 2 popular Johto Gym leaders have Johto/Gen 2 Pokémon as their ace (Whitney/Miltank & Clair/Kingdra). Pryce was also the main villain in the manga at one point. Jasmine had the new type and a side quests The other 4 are forgettable.

I did no items in battle and played on Set, and my team was Totodile, Teddiursa and Ledyba. Ledyba survived on 2 HP and KO'd the Scyther after my entire team went down, which was kino.

The only way you would ever struggle with Bugsy is if you pulled a room temperature IQ move like starting with Chikorita and skipping every optional trainer fight like a retard

Pryce and Morty get overshadowed for being midgame fights using essentially the exact same team as the Gen 1 Elite 4. The endgame fight that most people spent days trying to beat as a kid.
