I stole my pokemon games thanks to the internet, my parents paid for my first games, so I never spent a cent.
That also means I can have both versions, if I like the game I can use the other one a extra file to do whatever with, and with 3DS being modded I can use PKSM and save my favorite teams and transfer them into my other version for safe keeping.
But if I had to choose one

Basically I chose the one which I felt had the cover legendary with the better design (or, in the case of Kanto games, whichever one doesn't have Charizard because it's overrated). If I felt like doing a second playthrough I would play the opposite version on emulator so I didn't need to delete my save.

Nobody played Gold back in the day, since all the kids wanted Lugia. Also, Blue was superior to Red since we got Victreebel, Persian, and the 6500 coin Porygon.

I chose Blue, Sapphire, and Diamond because I preferred the cover art / main legendary. I chose Soulsilver, but in retrospect I think Heartgold was a better pick for me and had more appealing pokemon. I had a copy of Silver when I was really young, so I sort of felt obligated to pick that one when the remakes came out. I prefer Ho-oh and the Tin Tower over Lugia and the Whirl Islands anyday. White Forest was a no-brainer for me, and Yveltal just looked cooler than Xerneas. I did really like Clawitizer though, but that wasn't hard to get with the internet.

You can get both legendaries in Gold and Silver. It's just that if you want Lugia with Aeroblast you'd need Silver and if you wanted Ho-Oh with Sacred Fire you'd need Gold. Since there's a move relearner in HGSS the only difference now is the level you catch it at and how early you can get it.

I played all but those are the ones I played first. Sapphire is a odd one because I asked my mom to buy Ruby when I was a kid but she got the wrong one. Everything after that was downloaded instead.

Yeah, I was just destined to get Shield from the start. Even though I mostly prefer the blue versions.

Also I love how the Tyranitar and Hydreigon lines are considered counterparts.

Plus when I was playing with Missingno. stuff on Blue as a kid my Blue version got a lot more fucked up than my Red version, probably because of 'M. It kinda scared me as a kid.
