Is it overpowered? I've heard people say it's the best type. I've always thought you could balance it by making it weak to fire.

Its overpowered because it’s too optimized.
Defensively it resists/immune to 4 important types
Fighting is amazing offensively
Dragon type Pokémon tend to be strong so immunity to their STAB is useful
Dark has great moves like knock off, snarl, and sucker punch
Bug is actually worthless offensively based on the type chart but has u-turn making fairy resist the most common pivot move

Offensively it isn’t overpowered looking at the type chart but Moonblast is insultingly good. 95BP with 30% effect chance is ridiculous compared to Flamethrower/Ice Beam/ Thunderbolt. Having 90BP and
10% effect chance.

The best way to nerf it would be to remove 1 resistance and possibly give it another weakness. Bug is resisted by over 1/3 of all existing types so have fairy lose the bug resist.

There are a number of cultures that believe insects have supernatural/magic resistances, though the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Egypt. It kinda blows my mind that bug doesnt resist ANY of the 'magic' types. Fairy or dragon would be perfect.

It's actually a rather common trope in vidya as well, if I recall most Insect monsters in Monster Hunter have high Dragon element resistance

No. The whole point of it being weak to Steel and Poison is to give it more offensive use. Making it weak to Fire would just defeat the entire point; the reason Steel wasn't very good at countering Dragon is because damn near every Dragon type Pokemon can learn Fire attacks.

I really want to say it's overpowered not because I don't like it but because it has way too much convenience as >>48241933 mentioned. My only change would be to make bug SE to it because it makes more sense for fairy types to absolutely hate bugs. Pic unrelated.

It did a pisspoor job of that. The reason Poison isn't used offensively is because of the poor spread of Poison type attacks, and their mediocre damage. Steel was always a good niche offensive type for Pokemon like Scizor or Ferrothorn, both of which didn't need any buffs.

It's the best type because it's immune to the two highest BP moves, Outrage and Draco Meteor, resists Close Combat and Dark moves don't exceed 80 BP. Steel-type moves also tend to not exceed 80 BP.
All Fairy types have above-average bulk by virtue of the typing, and any with access to Moonblast have above-average offense and defensive prowess due to Moonblast's 30% SpA drop.
So yes, it's the best type. Steel is balanced by having three weaknesses to high BP moves. Fairy doesn't have this problem, much like Water.

Dragon element in Monster Hunter works differently than in other games. Things that are weak to Dragon element have high intelligence and are susceptible to mental manipulation, whereas insect monsters lack anything more than a hivemind and thus resist Dragon element.

Steel is better. I would say steel is the only overpowered type. It's a good thing ground is such a good typing because steel would be absolutely bonkers broken if it was any worse and thus less used. Fairy being useless against such an omnipresent type balances it out

Also Ground and Fighting-type moves, with some even having STAB like Kommo-o with Fighting or Flygon with Ground.
