Just got Sword + Expansions. Which starter will be the most helpful in a PVE/story run? You know, like how Bulbasaur was marketed as being the one for beginners way back then.

Anon, just go with your favorite. I suppose one could argue Scorbunny for reasons, but I don't want to spoil it.

If it really matters, then go with the bunny, but you'd be hard pressed to have any sort if type issue in this game no matter what you choose. Have a good time.

From easiest to hardest it's Scorbunny>Grooky>Sobble

It's not a hard game at all anyway, I picked Sobble. The starters=difficulty meme was started by people who don't bother to teambuild early on. You get a free electric type from the day care center on the road to the water type gym if you haven't caught a fucking Yamper already.

Plus the first three gyms are grass, water, and fire in that order.

Really it only matters in terms of the first gym since by the time you get to the next you'll be overpowered AND have more Pokémon to cover your weaknesses. Therefore:
>Easy / Bulbasaur Mode: Scorbunny
Effective against the first gym and Cinderace is absolutely busted with Pyro Ball.
>Medium / Squirtle Mode: Grookey
Neutral against the first gym and effective against the second. Rillaboom is just okay.
>Hard / Charmander Mode: Sobble
Weak against the first gym and neutral against the second.
But honestly this game is one of the easiest in the series. I had fun with it, but you shouldn't really have difficulty with any of the starters

Scorbunny with Libero, you can get it from Pokemon Home, I had fun messing around with his moveset and he can run through the story mode pretty easily.

Not that it really matters, but yeah, I'd say Jolly or Adamant. Probably Adamant between those two. Pyro Ball kills everything every time, but it would appreciate a little more Attack for its other moves

Jolly if you want to outspeed a lot of mons in the main story or Adamant for big dick damage. Personally I went with Adamant since a lot of Scorbunny/Cinderace's moves do tons of damage (Iron Head, Gunk Shot, Zen Headbutt just to name a few) with the added stab from Libero.

I think even with a -Speed Nature Cinderace is still going to outspeed most things in the main story. It's base Speed after a 10% would still be like 107. That's going to move first almost every time in normal gameplay

no, it's grass. every game has a bunch of bug/poison/flying pokemon early in the game so it's annoying as fuck to use.

It’s true but just for gen 1 and arguably gen 2 because of the shitty route distribution and/or rare Pokémon that the target audience didn’t knew about when those games released.

I picked grookie and had to purposefuly avoid random encounters so as to not gain XP too fast and have it evolve to early and steamroll gym leaders. So I wouldn't worry.

Not even, all picking Charmander, the generally considered, 'hard' option does, is force you to teambuild earlier. For Brock you're forced to get either a Mankey or male Nidoran for their fighting type moves. Mankey was arguably put in early to help deal with Brock's Onix because low kick is effective against him. For Misty you have a few options if you were lucky enough to find and catch a Pikachu in Viridian forest or get an Oddish or Bellsprout depending on your chosen version.

Even with Squirtle, they basically give you a cave full of Digletts right outside Vermillion city, and you also have access to Sandshrew if you're playing Blue version, and maybe you caught a Geodude from Mt. Moon.

I didn't even do that as a kid. I just brute-forced thru Brock and when I got to misty I brute-forced thru her too and then destroyed everything in my path due to the levels i gained dying over and over and over

On Yellow version as a kid I used a Viridian Forest Pidgeotto to beat Brock. Also brute force.

It IS a Yellow thing actually. The earliest you can get Mankey in Red is south of Cerulean. There isn't a super effective option against Brock in RB unless you pick Bulb or Squirt

Playing with your starter in any game is playing on easy. Starters as a whole have way better stats than the majority of Pokemon, and the later the generation, the bigger the power gap between the starter and whatever Pokemon you're facing. If you actually want a challenge you'd box your starter ASAP and go with the regional rodent or bug.
The only exception to this is Chikorita due to it having losing matchups against most Johto gyms and its playstyle leaning towards support, requiring proper team building to back it up, but this is the only example.

Also SWSH is impossible to be challenging because of forced EXP share.
