Digimon designs have more of a "cool" factor where as pokemon look more "cute". That is to say, while the idea of a dinosaur hydra blasting the shit out of a giant bug with an attack named absolute giga death is great, sometimes you need to take a breather and relax. For that, I have pokemon. Even designs like charizard and venasaur have a "Cuteness" to them that Digimon can't really seem to match.
In short, I'd rather battle alongside a digimon, but I'd rather spend downtime with a pokemon.
