The final grade is only allowed to be one full point higher than the lowest subgrade, so for that to happen the subgrades would have to be no lower than an 8 with at least one 10. I've never seen a 9 with more than one 8 subgrade.

you do realize only a very small fraction of collectors actually care to pay to have their cards graded right?
vast majority of raw cards on the market are from people in that category. you could easily find a raw gradeable 9 if you tried.
but if you just want the card for you collection and dont have slab autism or something, just buying a raw is way smarter anyways

Its a feature of ebay, you can set it to automatically send an offer to people who 'watch' your item.
I can't remember if it's automatic or not so I usually make sure to watch cards I want to get on the off-chance.

That's true. Most stuff isn't actually worth grading unless it's insanely rare or truly mint. That's why it's basically pointless to buy anything less than a 9 because it will be no different than a NM or LP card in most cases. It's very cringe to go on eBay and see people selling PSA 3, 4, 5 for some big premium when it's a literal junk slab and waste of plastic.

As someone who has 10k+ raw cards that are nearly all in PSA 8 or higher condition, I agree with >>48303986, just because most collections are damaged goods doesn't mean there aren't other collections with cards that are all mint, and even still only the truly gem-mint cards are actually hard to find and get graded. I would never buy a PSA 8 unless it was a card that very few copies were ever put into circulation.

Any recommendations for cards I could replace Victini or Celebi with? I think the yellow border stand out a bit too much.
This is my current plan for a binder page.
Also thought of dropping sylveon ex and putting sylveon V there and replacing that with the togepi tag team above it so I have the two tag team cards in the same row

Pic related is a PERFECT example of what I mean. Fucking no one is going to buy a PSA/CGC graded common, but Karen and her dog are certain that because it was before 2000 it'll make them money, regardless of what the card is.

8s are great for when you can't find a truly NM raw card, which is pretty rare but does happen. Premiums are low to negligible over raw and you're guaranteed that the seller isn't hiding anything.

Not worth $10k, 10k individual cards that I'd never waste my money on grading. Only the rarest and mintiest cards are worth grading in my opinion.

All these scalpers that are about to bulk-submit scratched cards from WOTC era and other mass-produced sets are going to hurt the market for everyone because they'll have take a loss to get rid of all of it.

Yeah, just dust. The only visible flaws are tiny white spots on each of the back corners, and it's a little off center.
I waited 3 or 4 months for one that meets my standards to show up and one never did, so I picked that up for like $10 extra. Honestly an 8 seems pretty harsh, but considering that doesn't really matter anymore it's definitely "good enough" quality.

It's easy if you like Pokemon. Look up their cards using bulbapedia, serebii etc and collect them. As you collect, you'll also find artists you like.

You can buy packs to gamble for new sets, or single cards on ebay for both old and new. Personally I don't enjoy buying singles online because the joy is the hunt (anyone who has ever said "mail day" is a raging faggoteur). I like scouring card shops, garage sales and flea markets for good deals.

Remember that collecting is personal and not for financial profit. Recognize your limits and determine what kind of cards you want to collect, both in terms of content and quality. I realized that I can get a lot of much cooler expensive cards for cheap if I'm willing to buy them moderately played. If it's a really expensive card, I'll buy heavily played cards but not if they have creases or heavy scratching on holos (edgewear, peeling, spots don't bug me). Setting those rules helps you manage your spending and also makes you worry less about what you "should" buy and what you actually want to buy. If you let other people dictate your collection, you'll drop thousands on ugly slabs of base Charizards and shining Ttars with no variety or whimsy.

I don't collect for value, I collect because I want pictures of Pokemon and something fun to do. Most of my cards came from buying collections from my playground friends who left the hobby. I am far more excited to find a rare card in a dusty flea market field for a quarter than buy a fullart on Ebay. I got my Munch Pikachu from waiting in line at the museum itself, and I find that aspect of the hunt far more meaningful. This type of card-comparing faggotry is exactly why I say to avoid letting other people dictate what you want.

If you want to do investing, there's much more productive and assured ways to make a profit.

So wait, was Onix shilled and or popular in the card game or in the anime? Or which part are we talking about? Because Brock's Geodude and Vulpix were much more popular and prevelant in the anime. And afaik Onix only had 3 prints during the entirety of the Gen 1 WotC sets and 2 were in Gym Heroes. I wouldn't exactly call either of those scenarios particualrily shilled.

You even mentioned the "off centering", but PSA has a tolerance of within 60/40% for centering and there is no way that your card is off center greater than that.

I'm expecting that anything lower than "mint" should have visible damage or scratches or edge wear -- but it doesn't even seem like that's the case. How can one justify the HUGE discrepancy in prices among the grades when the quality that causes their differences are so minute?

Because it's all speculation on nonexistent flaws. The grading companies want people to compulsively try regrading because they get a cut of every attempt. It's also because the Pokemon community has latched onto PSA, which does not explain their scores or offer more-detailed scores of individual components.

This is why I get so riled up about slabbed cards. Can you honestly tell me that you can see the difference between an 8-10 without a microscope? And yet the price almost drops off completely despite cards in the 5+ range all being so similar. It's easy to see why you would pay to avoid scratches, folds and wear but anything above 7 is just vanity spending.

Did the same for Dragon Majesty but that was just a few Battle Academy cards, a few theme deck non-holo exclusives, a blister pack card and a cheap League card, only odd one was a prerelease Dratini that was hard to find. Now that I think about it I only really go for fullsets of "special" sets but it's normally quite fun. Maybe if there's a new normal set I'll like I'll do that.

You can't get an 8 grade with "scratches all over the holo." You get an 8 with like ONE (1) scratch.

The problem is a lot of people selling 9.5s and claiming they'd be PSA 10 are lying dirtbags. They're basically selling an inflated PSA 9. That's why as a collector you'd be better off buying a regular PSA 9 because the odds of the 9.5 being a 10 is low otherwise everyone would do it since a 10 always carries a huge premium. If the seller believed it was a 10 they'd crack or cross-grade but instead they suck people into the idea of it being a 10 and rip them off.

People will still buy the grade over the actual condition in a lot of cases. Most people don't give a shit as long as it says 10 instead of 9 or 9.5 even with flaw(s). They just automatically assume it's as good as it gets. In the end, it depends what you value as a collector. Like I'd never buy a PSA 10 with weak centering, but other people don't care and just want the slab to have a 10 on it.

You go on eBay and see a person advertising a CGC 9/9.5 as a "PSA 10?!?!?" because PSA would let more slide on what they consider "perfect" as opposed to CGC or BGS. The reason they don't advertise as "BGS 9.5" is because 10 sounds better since the rating is a 10 out of 10. So they go with the company that has the greatest leniency with their 10 handouts.

Looking at the standards talked about on PSA's own fucking page don't corroborate with what we see in their current grading:

Compare the 10, 9, and 8 to cards graded today that we see. The Mickey 10 is flawless, the 9 has obvious off-centering issues greater than 60/40, and the 8 has a white mark on the card which detracts from the look.

PSA doesn't even live up to these standards on their website. There are plenty of cards posted here that are 8s or 9s that should be 10s (some of them are even Ttar's cards). And I see other cards that are PSA10s that are obviously not.

Grading is shoddy, and PSA's fucking website proves it as much. Obviously I want a flawless card, and I understand the premium in having a flawless card verified as such -- but right now it feels like a fucking lottery if I get graded a 9, an 8, or a 10.

So you're saying BGS and CGC have higher standards? I'm not saying that it's "easy" to get a PSA10 -- more that it's bullshit whether you will or will not. It's not consistent. Regardless of how lenient or inconsistent they are, PSA is the biggest name in the industry simply because they are already the biggest name. That's it. I havent had any pokemon cards since like 2000, so I haven't looked for other cool stuff. I've just started buying packs to open every so often for fun. But i would like them to stay nice because i found a stack of my old energy cards and they dont look happy. Not sure where the rest of my old cards are...

pretty based to be honest. swsh has some of the best character designs in the series too
there's also Hop, Rose, Peony and Peonia.
