You call it “bland and boring”, I call it “what a normal everyday person can wear in real life”.That’s why I think it’s a good design. It’s not the overdesigned weird fantasy sportswear that is typical of most male protagonists and is a breath of fresh air because of that. It’s has a comfy, welcoming boy next door vibe which I think meshes well with the games setting. Victors design also makes a lot more sense when you consider that the more typical sporty Pokémon protagonist design went to Hop, who’s was more passionate about Pokémon battles and convinced himself that HE was the protagonist. Victor was more of accidental protagonist, and that’s why his design is fitting.

im really into his confident, sporty look. total chad design imo (especially in comparison to a lot of the more reserved, blank slate male protags like OP's pic). nate looks less like a self-insert and more like an actual character fit for his very bright and animated world.

i want to add, it's the youthful energy of his design/outfit that makes him really refreshing. very befitting for a very content-rich, remix-sequel entry. also, it kinda feels like a reaction to BW's protag design, a simple red homage, which makes a solid first impression and is fitting for BW's ambitious presentation of more serious themes, but is still maybe too safe for a "new" pokemon game.
