The single player experience has become played out over time because GF is shit but the single player experience is what initially sold the games, it's what started the whole pokemaina back in the day. And to this day I guarantee most norimes don't give a shit about online battling.

actually, in sword/shield once the player gets to the wild area and receives the Ycomm they can do max raids with other people, so by that logic anyone who gets that far probably uses online a lot even if not trading or battling. technically talking to the faux players in the overworld wild area is also online interaction.

well people on ranked battles will be mostly properly bred and EV trained strong pokemon, why would anyone do online battles while they're still at the 4th gym? PVP battles aren't specifically end game content but for players who don't know all the mechanics yet or players who don't have the resources built up to make a competitive team have no reason to do online fights. You'll see a Timmy every now and then but not as often. Rental team codes have made this way easier to just grab someone else's team and play but there's still a degree of skill/familiarity with the people you'll see in the online ladder.

Kids and normalfags only care about the single player and collecting things like legendaries and shinies. The only reason why raid battles are such a popular "online" feature is because it's the only way to collect certain Pokemon in SWSH. It's a cooperative feature, not a competitive one. Only manchildren care about comp.

Also now with what we got now there are so much better singleplayer rpg games. LEGENDS really need to step up or be another failure like Town. no, I never argued that they're completely relevant to every player and you may have me confused with someone else. Yes, I'm saying online random fights hold little relevance BECAUSE only end game vet players enjoy more than 5 matches, Timmy will get pub stomped and not come back. Really, only people who love the battle system will stick around to master the online metas.
Let's not forget Pokemon these days is designed to be a jack of all trades game, people can singleplayer story, collect, train and battle, hell you can just groom them like regular pets and play with them. Of course not everyone's going to be reaching the pinnacle of what the game's fights have to offer, and because they won't if they try PVP they will get smashed and probably won't continue to do online fights.

You dont even know how many people enjoy online battles. You unironically think it's a small minority when it's not. Reason why XY and forward put more emphasis on battling then the overall adventure is because the rise in competitive players grew exponentially. There is a huge interest for it and you being stuck in gen3 won't change that fact

I guess I should have mentioned I was taking a middling approach. I think online fights are still a fun feature but only if the game can even implement such a system. I'd love to have Zatch Bell-esque fights as human with pokemon against another human and pokemon, but I cannot see GF able to design such a system with good netcode that we'd appreciate.

This. I'm a normie, and all my friends are even normier. The ones that play pokemon DO NOT purchase it for multiplayer battles and only go through the single player.

To extend this to pre-Ranked Online days, like in gen 1,2,3,4 -- I didn't know a single person that cared about battling. PvP through a link cable was something I literally never saw. I played a friend a couple times in online battles in Gen 4. That's it.
