What was the point of setting this in the past again? We already know the origins of Sinnoh the pokemon world and the tech is still modern enough. The ancestor characters won't matter either since there is no backstory we need to know about their modern day counterparts.
I think the only reason they chose that timeframe was so they would have an excuse for an empty field
