Headbutt Method in Azelea Town, currently 8500 encounters in. SoulSilver

I failed a Sawsbuck in Black earlier this year when it jump kicked itself to death, will reclaim a Deerling one day.
When XY first came out I knocked out a Mareep in a swarm, wasn't too fussed as I found another Shiny Mareep two days earlier.

Now that the 100 hour anon has found is Mareep, is anyone else hunting for it atm?

Shiny Graveler in a horde encounter. The other Graveler killed it turn 1. Eventually got a shiny Geodude but thinking of that Graveler still stings

I've got Chikorita and Mareep in my HGSS run. What should I aim for next so I'm not just a massive repeat of what everyone else is doing? Was thinking maybe going for one of the Nidorans or Stantler.

desu I should get into that habbit too, but in this case I was using the hordes for EV training - it just so happened that one of those Graveler was golden and the other guys immediately Magnitude'd it to death :(

The one close thing to a failure I had was a few weeks ago. I was hunting Pheromosa and my prizes were a shiny Druddigon and Rotom. I picked Druddigon because I had a shiny rotom already (actually 2) but this stunt ruined my 100% shiny capture record. Darn Dynamax Adventure...

Thanks anon, I thought instead of people asking and looking for this info it might as well all be in one place, always open for suggestions for further additions.
I'm hoping to put together a rough guide for Gen 2-5 eventually, methods available in each game, useful abilities, where to find hunting mons like smeargle, how to properly build those mons etc.

Thanks anon, thought we might as well have something to help people out, if you have any suggestions please let me know.
Planning on making simple guides for Gens 2-5, just outlining the methods, best pokemon to hunt with and where to find them, best move pools for hunting etc

As for actual hunt though it was shiny pelipper in ORAS using dexnav. (again no pic, I think that one's on my old phone)

Like the 6th den I ever tried in sword had a full odds shiny three star ditto in it. Almost shat my pants. But unfortunately I didn't know that you could fail a captures in dens (I was maybe five hours into the game), nor that dittos capture rate was very low. So I just threw a regular old PokeBall at it and it broke out immediately. I don't think I'll get to reclaim that one any time soon... It still stings.

I did chikorita last time I did hg, only took me about 32 resets (was going with any shiny I got for starters but I wanted chikorita so it was a huge win). Looks great in game, that golden leaf is cool

Darkrai, had a rom of the event distribution so could hunt it properly in Platinum.
Had it paralyzed and on 1hp, but didn't have a masterball (already used on Shiny Giratina)
it struggled to death.
Reclaimed it the same week.

started playing gen 3 games after having not touched pokemon in ages.

for the beldum that you pick up and legendaries that you interact with to start the encounter is it as simple as starting on a different frame to roll? are roaming pokemon time consumingly impossible?

I honestly can't explain it well enough, all I know is that hunting in Emerald normally, and Ruby/Sapphire if the batteries are dry, is a massive pain and is done by frames.

Other gen 3 games though, FireRed and Leaf Green, you can just soft reset as normal.

And for the mystery gift stuff your best way would be to use action reply cheats or edit the save file.
If you have a DS and a DS Rom cart like an R4 theres a save back up tool that can extract the .sav file from Gen 3 games.

Literally had an uncatchable Bidoof as my first encounter (not counting Starly) on my Pearl cart. Still yet to either get the Palkia I wanted from that cart or a reclaim.

On a side note, my friend finally got his shiny Bulbasaur last night after 3 months of resetting in LG! Was very hype to hear him basically squeal in the middle of a CS:GO match. In a good way, I think we feel like children again when we hunt shinies. That pure joy you get from the sparkles is just something special.

I'm not really hunting right now but I did daily catching a shiny Unown in VC Crystal yesterday during a casual replay of the game. Very sad that it does before I could catch it. Roommate was in utter disbelief that I had found another shiny since it seems to happen every playthrough for me and he never gets any. Maybe I'll go hunt a replacement down later.

Only about 1 or 2 hours ago I found a shiny Poliwhirl from chain fishing and accidentally ran from it. The ball icon is just way too close to the run button. Thankfully out of all the shinies too lose this will be one of the absolute easiest to reclaim.

Also holy shit shinies are so easy to get in 6th gen. I downloaded Y about a week ago and have found close to 30 shinies since from various methods.

It's probably not as rare as you think. I get sub 20 chain shinies about 1 in 10 hunts with poke radar.
I once got a ralts on 2 in diamond.
I think it's because the pokeradar rolls 4 pokemon at once and multiples of them can be the one you're looking for so your chances of find one with each blast of the radar are higher than base odds at the least.
In order to dispel some myths and full on superstitions i had in my mind i once did a hack so a specific pokemon would always be a shiny then started a chain with them, i kept blasting the poke radar over and over again to see if things like patches being inline, or stepped did anything like i thought they did. they didn't btw, just go for the one furthest away that's the same type of shake. I did this in gen 4 btw, i have no idea how to hack gen 6.

Not currently hunting but before last month I had never even gotten Pokerus before despite playing for years, but now I've randomly gotten it in both Platinum and SS on separate occasions. I was thinking about shiny hunting a Dusclops in Platinum after I beat SS for the first time but now I think I'm doing it for sure even I am cursed and can only get Pokerus from now on. I've only even found one shiny before as well as it was during a fucking Nuzlocke years ago.

The rules are probably simpler than the last time you looked there was all sorts o of supersitious garbage aorund when i learned like "stepped patches raise chances but inline shares chances, don't go for a 4-away i its inline with a shaking patch that isn't what you used ot start the chain" nah, that's all bullshit, just go for 4 aways. makes sure they're the same as the patch you started, and make sure they're not on the edge of the grass patch because if you don't have at least one patch of grass one step away from you, the shaking patches might all appear where there's no grass and that'll get you.
See this little fucker right here? i once broke a chain by using that. the pokemon was an eevee, but there was no shaking after i killed it because my one away just happened to fall on that one empty spot. Never again.
I got my eevee btw, 4 actually. Also 2 porygons. Trophy garden is the good shit.

Mine was in pokemon silver. I caught a shiny magikarp in the Dragon's Den. Ironic. I didn't use it because I was afraid it might lose it's shininess upon evolving.

I have never failed to capture any shiny I have encountered.

I think the neatest thing I ever caught was a shiny Haunter at Lavender's tower. Neatest thing I ever saw was a shiny Kangaskhan that appeared in the safari zone. And the only thing I ever really tried to reset for but got bored of trying to get was the Extreme Speed Dratini you get in HG/SS.

My 3DS XL has a habit of disconnecting the game/misreading it - fucking up and going to either "shut me off cunt" or "hit the home button, fucko" mode. Spent 2 months hunting Suicune in a wormhole and found the beautiful fucker. Caught, exited WH, started doing something else, 3DS fucked up, then I realised I'd fucked up and didn't save.

Sorry to hear it anon, I’ve found a good way to prevent this is hunting on a desk, picking up your DS only when you need to reset.
A little more effort is required but it’s worth it in the long run.

Shinx is a pretty good training wheels one

Route 202 has a huge grass patch with a couple caveats to teach you best practices with and with a static lead you can reset after a mulligan with little effort.
I taught 2 of my friends on shinx. start your chains from red patch.
Go for 4 aways of the same type of shake you started the chain with.
Watch out for the blue patches because when you kill a pokemon, the next radar blast happens where you stand so if you're standing on the edge of the grass patch it possible for all the randomly generated grass shakes to fall outside the patch and that'll end your chain. i usually take the risk early on in the chain because not much to lose unless the pokemon i'm chaining has a low encounter rate.
If nothing looks good find a safe direction to run back and forth in and after 50 steps you can blast the poke radar again. when you get to 40, just keep resetting the radar like this until you see the shinny jiggle. you'll start to go crazy and think the violently rustling grass looks like a shiny jiggle, but trust me, you'll know the shiny jiggle when you see it. it behaves differently, i'd say it's more "glowy" than "sparkly"

I want to hunt larger game like Dusclops since it has a 50% rate with a repel and a level 39 at sendoff spring, assuming the calculator is accurate. I think I might try that next if I'm successful with Dusclops though. I kind of want Minun too so we'll see how that goes and if I can get the hang of chaining.

Encounter rates don't matter for anything other than the first encounter. rare mon, common mons, they all become just as common on 4 aways (and just as possible to fail for no reason, it happens).
My only gripe would be sendoff spring looks a little shitty for chaining. Not the worst route i've seen, but it's a bit narrow on the north-south run. You'll want to put yourself a bit south of the center of that patch so you can free up the whole top row of 4 aways instead of having both the top and bottom rows run up against a wall/trees
The other option is going for duskull on route 209 and evolving it. But it's a lot lower encounter rate which will probably be frustrating to learn with.

Definitely is just checked, however the encounter rate will be very low so you'll need a white flute and illuminate. Repel hunting is also a massive pain so might be worth trying some easier hunts before this one.

Problem is you need DPP. It's in XY too but it's different and a lot of routes have completely unusable grass patches due to size or the horrible angle the camera is at.

I've got a cheat running that lets you start a chain like normal, then it targets your chained mon and makes it and only it shiny every time. I stared this chain on a very shakey bush but as you can see at 0:01, 0:19, 0:51, and 1:10, there are 4 aways that are very shakey, but aren't kirlias.
Those are the motherfuckers that break your chains.
If i was a little more autistic than I already am, i'd record this for 30 minutes and tally up all the results to see what the odds are for each of the spots.

It it seems to vary based on where the shaking grass patches end up. and also if you go up or down. You can safely go 7 tiles north of a shaking grass tile and 8 squares west. One more step and it ends the chain. I'm not sure if it's 7 south and 8 east because the grass i was testing this on had walls in those directions but just know not to venture too far away from the shakey grasses

Was doing a speedrun of Fire Red on a Rom/Emulator and ran into a shiny Zubat while in Mt. Moon. Caught it but didn't use it during the run. I kept the save for a while thinking I would do something with it but eventually just deleted it. I've had pretty bad luck with shiny Pokemon compared to other people I think. I've played the games since Blue version and have only ever encountered that Zubat.

I don't blame you for giving up on Hawlucha. It and every other Pokemon with a Rare call rate are a terrible ordeal to SOS Chain.

The frustrating thing is, I managed to get Hawlucha to shine with its Hidden Ability from an SOS chain, even though I wanted Unburden instead. Decided to keep it because there's no way I'm going through that mess again.

So thankfully I wasn't in a chain, but I am 99% positive my Super Repel just failed. I was running to reset my radar, I wasn't in a chain at all, and I ran into a Lv. 29 Shellos with my Lv. 46 Weavile. Checked my repel and it was still active. Never experienced this before.

Gen 3 is fucked for shiny hunting because shiny determination is based on the clock or somehting in RSE. Avoid it if you can. I think FRLG are normal though, If you want to do it for the challenge, look it up.
Hunting Latios is ass unless you've got the eon ticket, it's possible to reset on roaming pokemon, but the IVs, nature, shininess get locked in at various points, from memory in emerald it's when you watch the tv and decide whether it's a latios or latias and in HGSS it's when you do somehting in vermillion city, you then have to track down the roaming mon, see if it's shiny, then reset back to the initial point. Super annoying.
For gift pokemon you just save and soft reset.
As for improved odds, gen 4 was the first gen with improved shiny odds since the shiny determination method was moved away from IVs so gen 3's fucked there. Chaining is only available in the form of pokeradar chaining in DPP, HGSS doesn't have it. There are guides around if you're interested, it's fairly easy once you learn but it's very intensive compared to soft resetting or wild mon running. It's hard to do anything else at the same time cause if you look away at the wrong time you can get fucked because you don't see where the shaking bushes show up. Masuda method is available in both DPP and HGSS but you'll need to have a foreign language pokemon, preferably ditto.
There's also escort sections at various points in DPP's story, iirc there's a chick in eterna forest and lucario man in some island cave. When you're running around with them wild battles become double battles so you have twice the chance of getting a shiny at these parts, just remember to be ready to kill the escort mon first so they dont kill your shiny before you catch it.
Shiny hunting the starter in HGSS is also technically an improved odds method. The starter rolls for shininess in the starter select screen so each soft reset technically rolls 3 pokemon for shiny odds.

I've been successfully shiny chaining the last few days in Gen 4 with pokéradar. Here's my guide:
1. Teach a high level mon False Swipe.
2. Buy Super Repels and Ultra Balls (or balls of your choosing). I recommend having 120-200 Super Repels per hunt. The amount of Ultra Balls depends on the mon you're hunting. High catch rate, like Starly, 60 is more than enough. Medium catch rate, 80-100. Low catch rate, I'd pack like 150-200 just to be safe. If you're hunting something like a Beldum with a legendary catch rate, you'll need a ton of Ultra Balls (I'd say like 500).
3. Find a patch of grass like >>48368928, it can even be smaller than that.
4. Lead with your False Swiper, and register the radar.
5. Activate it and always go for the shiny leafy patches. They particularly give you the non-traditional Pokémon for those routes, but I use them regardless because they're just easier to spot.
6. Once you encounter your mon, False Swipe it and catch it. Catching the Pokémon raises your chance of successfully chaining by 10%. It is NOT worth not catching it. You will save more time this way IMO than getting to a for example 30 chain and breaking it.
7. Your chain has begun, use the Pokétch app that shows you your chain (the one that has the highest three chains shown on the screen).
8. ONLY enter grass that is of the same type as the type you started the chain with (again, I recommend the shiny leafy patches). And ONLY enter patches that are either four patches away horizontally OR vertically from where you reset the radar in that instance (see pic related, you would only enter grass within the light blue and orange lines). Going 4 away gives you, after catching the previous Pokémon in your chain, a 98% chance of the chain continuing. You should reset the radar if you don't spot a desirable patch.
9. Get to a chain of 40. At that point you no longer have to encounter patches. You can keep resetting the radar until a shiny patch appears.

It's totally possible to do, i've been doing that the whole time and i've gotten like 7 chains up to 40.
I get around 5-10 failures on average before getting up to 40 though.

Side notes:
-You can easily get money in DPPt by battling Gentlemen Jeremy and Socialite Reina with Amulet Coin on the route south of Hearthome (near the mansion) using the VS Seeker. 16,000P per battle.
-Shiny patches look like pic related.
-You can use Pokémon with certain abilities to increase your 98% chain chance, like a static mon against if you're chaining Shinx on Route 202 (I recommend practicing on him for your first chain).
-You have a 2% chance of getting a shiny patch with every radar use after you get your 40 chain, but make sure you're using the radar in a spot where you're getting 4 patches to shake every time (because each patch alone has a 0.5% chance of being shiny).
-Sometimes you'll get the shiny patch before the 40 chain, other times it will take way over odds. You can expect the chain itself to break on some hunts and not on others.

Catching vs. not catching is a difference of 98% to 88%. You are very likely to break the chain with only 88% chance for each of the 40 rolls. Even with 98% you have a decent chance of breaking it.

It takes a little longer to catch, but grinding money against the two trainers I listed takes no time at all, and I personally think it's more efficient than constantly resetting your chain, especially past 20, and really especially if you're chaining a low encounter rate mon.

Well if you want early game shinies gen 2 has some broken bullshit.
Shinies can pass on their shininess through breeding. I think it's a 1/128 chance with gyarados as the parent or something like that but it's 1/64 if you have a shiny ditto, which coincidentally you can get by abusing glitch with mimic and transform in gen 1. There's also the odd egg which has a massive chance of being a shiny, it's somehting like 12%.

And your chance of the chain continuing is dependent on how far away you encounter the next patch from where you're standing. It's something like 88%, 66%, 44%, 22% not including the 10% previous catch bonus.

It's really easy once you get the hang of it. You can get a shiny of most mons within 1 to 2 hours, maybe a little more if you have bad luck. You can also get as many shinies as you want per chain, but pack more repels.

One more important thing I forgot to mention! Running away too far from a shaky patch completely wipes your chain and turns off the radar. Stay close to any one particular patch when running to reset. I think within 6 or 7 steps any one direction.

The reason for this is because the radar could end up scanning completely opposite of the grassy section and thus yields no shaky patches.

I think that's everything you need to know. It's a lot simpler once you actually start doing it.

Well it is less than 2%
It's 0.5% per patch with glameow, and not all 4 patches are going to be glameow.
You can see about how many patches are the mon you're chaining per poke radar blast here >>48369940
Looks like the average is somewhere around 2
Also I don't know exactly how it works but you don't just add probabilities together like that
I think it's called cumulative odds and the equation for it has those fucking Limit things i never really understood

masuda method by far.
There is no chaining bonus in swoosh. you just get a tiny bonus from the number you've defeated. at 500 number battled, you go from 1/4096 to 1/3562. It's fucking pitiful.
With shiny charm it only brings it down from 1/1365 to 1/1301
It's 1/683 with masuda method or 1/512 with shiny charm.

Yeah well they've probably done it wrong. Their math assumes all the patches are at the 1/200 chance but unless there's somehting specific about the calculation that means it does a separate roll for shininess for each patch and forces it to be your chained mon, that's just bad logic.
I don't think this is the case because i've chained a lot of pokemon and the odds are definitely way below 1/50. usually i'll be resetting for like 20 minutes before i get something.
I know, woe is me, 20 minutes for a shiny, but still, I can burn through a shit tonne of max repels in that time since all i'm doing is resetting.

Pretty sure this is wrong. It's .5% chance that it will be a shiny of the mon you're chaining, and each of those shakes has that chance. Just because one turns out to be a different mon doesn't mean it had that chance.

Just making sure but Emerald is the only one of the gen 3 games with actual RNG problems, right? FRLG work as expected and RS work as they should as long as the battery hasn't run dry?
I just don't wanna try starting a badge quest in gen 3 and throwing multiple tens or hundreds of hours into it only to find I've been playing even more against the odds.

I've done this a lot and the odds feel way lower than 2%
I feel justified by the amount of times i've seen people going "wtf this is supposed to be 2% odds" too. But I don't know, i have no idea how to figure it out without just recording dozens of hours of pokeradar resets on chain 40 and doing the math.
