Makes more sense like this than Gens 7 and 8 where the trainers are right next to the Pokemon and conveniently disappear when the Pokemon attack.

Don't forget the overworld pokemon have new turning animations. Keep in mind even monster hunter stories 2 doesn't have turning animations for some perspective here.

As someone who's hyped for Legends the reason is simply this: Trainer Battles are just Wild Pokemon Fights...mainly thought of this due to the lack of Pokeballs meaning they technically don't own their Pokemon they just have a bond....

So this battle is more against a Munchlax more than a trainer battle...
