Everytime you fail to catch a shadow pokemon, like it being killed by recoil, earthquake, you have to stick your dick in the sharpener and turn it on for 3 seconds. after that reset and try to catch it again.
Time spent in it increases the more you fail to capture it, but resets once you do.
