I think the drummer concept is good but the way it was executed was piss poor. I think an easy fix would be to have Rillaboom play the drum with it oriented like an actual tree stump instead of upright like a man-made drum set. This way it feels more like an animal. You could even have the roots of the tree trunk wrapped around Rillaboom's back like straps when it's not being used as a drum. Now it looks more like an animal whose species carries around a tree stump to use as a drum but it looks and feels more organic.

Rillaboom is just a bad design inherently. Why does banging a wooden drum cause vines to appear from the ground? It's completely thoughtless and shows that it was thought as a pokemon with a job first, rather than the opposite. Say what you want about the other two, but at least their signature moves reflect their designs.

Music making plants grow better/faster/etc is a pretty common new-age belief, you can find dozens of articles about it and there's even a Mythbusters episode covering it. I agree Rillaboom is a shit design but it's not because of the music/plant connection, you're just too ignorant to understand it.

Anon, it’s literally animated and explained for you in-game. Rillaboom using instruments is a combination of two things: the effect sound has on plants, and primate tool use. You may not like its design and that’s totally valid, but the design accomplishes what it wants to do do it’s not a “shit design” by any metric.

The fact that you practically have to write a dissertation to explain why a gorillamon needs a wooden drum that magically appears out of nowhere is proof that it's a bad design. It's a shame, because without the drum it's probably one of the best Grass starter designs on par with Venusaur and Torterra.

We've had "character" Pokemon since the start like Cubone. Also, starters are designed to be closer as partners now so they feel more special.
It's fine if you prefer the older starters but there are those who prefer the newer approach to starters that make them more unique.
