To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the appeal of Showdown. The gameplay is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of advances game theory most of the metagame will go over a typical low ELO scrub.
There's also Smogon's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from scat Pokémon-on-human femdom fanfics, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these plays, to realise that they're not just a good way to climb- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Showdown and OU truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Smogon's existential catchphrase "Evasion is unfair and unbalanced" which itself is a cryptic reference to Victor Pelevin's Russian epic Чиcлa. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as PokeaiMD's genius wit unfolds itself on their computer screens. What fools.. how I pity them.
